Having learned its lesson, Nintendo is taking every necessary precaution to ensure that the same thing doesn't happen to the Wii U

At a recent shareholders meeting, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata admitted that 3DS sales have gotten off to a slow start and that the lack of a solid software lineup is likely the reason. 

Nintendo's 3DS has hit more than a few rough patches since its release in March of this year. During the first week of its release, Nintendo sold 400,000 systems, but has had trouble keeping the sales momentum.

Iwata said in the meeting that the new portable game system "continues to struggle," and believes that it would have sold better if the launch lineup had been better prepared

"We also must reflect on the fact that we were not able to launch Nintendo 3DS at a time when a sufficient number of strong software titles were ready," said Iwata. 

Having learned its lesson, Nintendo is taking every necessary precaution to ensure that the same thing doesn't happen to the Wii U

"In order to avoid the same thing from happening to the Wii U, we are considering details, such as what software is suitable for the launch, more carefully than ever before," said Iwata.

Iwata also noted that one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes was not investing in the creation of certain games with third parties, but it is now willing to do so.

In other news, the shareholders meeting also brought up the possibility of Nintendo jumping onto the mobile bandwagon with devices or an app store, and Iwata made it clear that Nintendo is still in research mode regarding such endeavors. 

"If we had never considered combining a mobile phone and a handheld device, we would be negligent," said Iwata. "But on the other hand, mobile phones are subject to monthly fees, and we need to consider how well this would fit with game devices or how we should balance these aspects.”

I think there is a far bigger issue. Smart phones and MP3 players can now play the kind of basic games that portable game systems do. so why have portable game systems? They always existed only as a way of wasting time playing low end games. Portable devices are converging fast into a single device that will be pretty much what smart phones now are and there will be no need for anyone to have any other type of device. Nintendo should be ditching the sales model of a system and working on selling their games to people for use on their smart phones and mp3 players.

Err, have you never played streetfighter 4/Volt on the iPhone? It is seriously good. A lot of the time, the problem is no the hardware, its developers not properly focussing on the control challenges that not having any buttons causes. You can work around it.

Re the 3DS, I am on the fence on whether to buy one. I will wait until the second iteration of the hardware, but as somebody else said, the time I would have spent playing the 3DS on the way to work every day is now taken up by playing on the iPhone so I'm not really sure when I'd use it... The fact tat it is in 3D does hook into my overall strategy (I am replacing all my TV's with 3D capable passive 3D ones from LG) but still, meh!
