Apple's iPad 2 can now be jailbroken
Easy iPad 2 jailbreak released via jailbreakme.com

When it comes to jailbreaking iOS devices, there has been a working solution for just about every iPod touch and iPhone available. Even the original iPad has had a jailbreak solution for quite some time.

The iPad 2, on the other hand, has been quite difficult to crack by software hackers. Now the chains are finally off, and the iPad 2 (along with its other iOS brethren) can be jailbroken via a simple browser-based utility.

JailbreakMe 3.0 follows up on a similar browser-based jailbreak that was released last year. All a user needs to do is to visit jailbreakme.com, click on the "Free" button, click "Install", and the untethered jailbreak will start. Not surprisingly, this method of installing the jailbreak is similar to downloading an app from the App Store to add some familiarity to the experience.

According to the Dev-Team blog, the following devices are supported:

  • iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPad2: 4.3.3
  • iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
  • iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
  • iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3

As is usually the case with jailbreaks, install at your own risk. Also, take the Dev Team's advice and install the PDF Patcher 2 utility from Cydia to avoid any malicious attacks from the PDF exploit that Apple left wide open.

Apple iPad 2 Finally Jailbroken via Safari PDF Exploit

It only came out 3-4 months ago, right? So how fast was everything else jailbroken?

I know some type of exploits are always found right away for Apple products, but a full-on jailbreak has normally taken this long if I recall correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think most of their devices have been jailbroken within the first 6 weeks. Either the dev team didn't pour enough resources into this one, or Apple's security is slowly getting better.

This will just fuel Apple more being anti Adobe since this involved Adobe PDF's. Flash will probably never come now. I suspect Apple will cripple HTML 5 in fear that too will threaten the Apple Appstore. Its never been that I dont like Apple its been more of I dont like the limitations of their products.

The reality is Mobile devices are going to have to accept running some sort of Anti-Virus/Malware applications sooner than later. After all they are just Micro sized computers. A 1.2ghz snapdragon cpu with a decent GPU in a phone/tablet makes it a computer and the OS's on these things have evolved to be optimized versions of larger desktop alternatives with constant access to wireless medium/Internet. Only the form factor is different from a PC.

Apple wont cripple HTML5 because it could never compete with Flash when it comes to games and apps. Believe me, i've tried. It's no threat to there App Store. But without HTML5 theres absolutely nothing Apple can use that can atleast do some of the things Flash can.
Also Apple holds a stake in the H.264 codec which HTML5 uses for video. It's probably also one reason why Google have removed support for H.264 in Chrome.

I agree! When I saw the word "finally" the first time I thought it was way too much. 3 months to hack this does not make good use of the word "finally."

I could see it being used for Sony and the PS3 which took over a couple of years, but not for this.

It came out 3.9 months ago, right? So should you be using the word "actually?" ;-P
