Toyota prepares its 40 mpg "family" hatchback

We first brought you news of the production version of the Prius v, a larger variant of the popular Prius, back in January. The Prius v is the latest effort by Toyota to expand its hybrid reach and make the Prius nameplate its best selling model in the United States (that honor currently goes to the Camry). 

Ed Larocque, Toyota's Marketing Manager of Advanced Technology, has confirmed that the 5-seat hatchback will go on sale in October of this year. The Prius v was supposed to go on sale this summer, but the earthquake that hit Japan in March altered Toyota's production schedule. 

Toyota hopes that it will find 30,000 buyers a year in the U.S. for its new Prius v, which shouldn't be too hard a target to hit. Toyota sold 140,928 Prii in 2010 alone. 

The larger body of the Prius v allows it to have more cargo room than its sibling (34.3 cu ft behind the rear seats versus 21.6 cu ft). Toyota says that this better use of space will make the vehicle a better fit for young families who don't want to step up to a mammoth minivan or crossover.

Unfortunately, maximum seating capacity for the Prius v is an un-minivan-like five. Toyota offers a seven-seat variant of the Prius v in Japan which is made possible because the Japanese market vehicle uses a smaller, lighter lithium-ion battery pack which is located between the front seats. In an effort to keep costs in check for the U.S. market, Toyota decided to use an older style nickel-metal hydride battery pack which is located in the cargo area, robbing space for the third-row seat. 

Another downside is that the Prius v uses the same powertrain as the standard Prius, yet it is over 200 pounds heavier. That means that 60 mph comes up in a leisurely 11.5 seconds. The added weight and inferior aerodynamic design mean that the Prius v can "only" muster 40 mpg combined compared to 50 mpg combined for the Prius.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but it expect the Prius v to be priced a few thousand more than a comparably equipped Prius.

The Prius family will grow yet again this time next year with the 50+ mpg subcompact Prius c.

When it all comes down to it, there are visual aspects of even 'car as art' cars like Ferrari's that I don't like.

I drive an 06' Mini JCW and I would say it's the epitome of what a luxury hot hatch can be. Striking exterior style, Leather interior, and performance that knocks the snot out of more expensive cars like the Infiniti G37S Coupe, Charger SRT8, Mazda RX-8, Subaru STI Hatch, '06 Mustang GT and pretty much every other hot hatch to come to the field for the long track. Then on the short track (auto-X), drivers routinely roflstomp Porsche Cayman's, and go toe to toe with Lotus.

For the Car & Driver lightning lap, there was not a single car that could compete with it at the $30,000 price point. To really start pulling ahead (3-5 second advantage), you are headed into $50k-$100k car territory.

Oh yeah, and then there are cars like the Renault Clio Sport V6 that was provided one of the most amazing driving experiences I have ever had.

Notice I put ugly in quotes? That should kind of indicate to you that it wasn't MY opinion. What's with the hostile tone?

Oh and I own a Subaru and love the brand, but I don't think using the STI is helping your case. The 'hatch STI was reviled so much they went back to the sedan after a few short years. Even though the hatchback had better weight distribution and handling. Admit it, the STI hatchbacks were SO ugly. STI's in general aren't exactly considered to be the sexiest cars on the road, and switching to a hatch certainly didn't improve things.

Also why is performance such a huge part of your post? We're talking exclusively subjective opinions on the look of a car. You act like I'm the first person to bring up the fact that, for the most part, hatchbacks are considered ugly by a lot of people. Get over it.

I don't even know why you would bring this up, knowing I'm American. I don't think I've even SEEN a Renault on the road here. Can I even buy one? Doubt it. I've never seen a Renault dealership.

Because if you had any reading and comprehension skills, you'd realize that I was responding to your post about luxury/performance hatchbacks and not the aesthetic portion of the post above it.

Man you really do have a hard on for me, don't ya? It's a sad day when two guys can't talk about cars without this kind of childishness.

You ignored every single point I made, but whatever. Instead you deliberately chose to NOT GET my point. In segments where auto-makers charge a high premium, hatchbacks are poorly represented. Yes, you found a few examples. Bravo. Nowhere did I say they did not exist at all, I don't remember saying that.

Back to the matter at hand, the Prius isn't "ugly" just because it's a hatch. But as for my personal opinion, there is no angle or aspect of the vehicle where I find it aesthetically pleasing. And you know what? You aren't supposed to. It was designed with MAXIMUM MPG in mind, not to be sexy and curvy.

Also, you know what, the OP was ASKING why people thought the Prius was ugly. So I gave him my opinion. You got a problem with that, take it up with someone who gives a shit.

Check the JCW at #79.

Now check the WRX (#75 and #76), Mazdaspeed 3 (#72 and #73), Solstice GXP (#71), Genesis Coupe 3.8 (#69), Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec (#65), Colbalt SS (#60)...a lot of inexpensive cars beat the JCW.
