Dual core is in store, and maybe more

Apple, Inc. (AAPL) made the interesting decision of pushing its standard iPhone launch back from June to September -- a three month delay.  Fans of the Cupertino, California gadget maker did receive some consolation with the release of a CDMA-capable iPhone on Verizon Communications, Inc.'s (VZ) network in February and the release of white iPhones at the end of April.

However, the delay was also costly for Apple, which had already fallen behind Google Inc.'s rival Android OS in U.S. and worldwide sales.

But the painful wait may finally almost be over for Apple's remaining fans.  A few months ahead of launch 9 to 5 Mac is reporting that final testing stage iPhone 5 hardware (dubbed the "AP" stage within Apple) is making the rounds.

According to the site's sources, 3G FaceTime on Verizon still isn't a done deal by any means.  If you recall, the iPhone 4 CDMA version was unable to accept video calls using Apple's FaceTime software.  Verizon reportedly was concerned about the software's high data demands.

Even if 3G is agreed upon, it seems extremely unlikely that Verizon customers will get 4G video chat -- a much hoped for feature.  Reportedly, Verizon is also trying to work out issues with its promised over-the-air updates scheme for the iPhone 5.  OTA updates may not begin until Fall 2011.

The recently released iOS 5.0 SDK revealed two new iPhone hardware versions, the "N94" and "N93".  The N94 reportedly packs a GSM and a CDMA chip.  It also packs the dual-core A5 ARMv7 CPU found in the iPad 2.

It is unclear what the N93 is, but some (including 9 to 5 Mac) suggest that it may be a model destined for the Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) or Deutsche Telekom AG's (DTE) T-Mobile network in the U.S.

Based on the iOS 5.0 SDK it also appears that the rear-facing camera will stay at a resolution 5 megapixels, and not receive the bump to 8.0 megapixels that some Apple fans were hoping for.  We're guessing that won't stop most of those fans from buying iPhone 5s, though.

iPhone 4S?

Pretty sure it's been reported that the phone due out this year will be called the iPhone 4S. It will be a minor refresh of the existing iPhone 4 with dual core processors, but same camera and screen resolution. No 4G radio.

Next years model will be the iPhone 5, which will change form factors and have 4G.

At least that's what I've read, but then again, who cares? There will be another 100 Android phones to choose from by the time Apple gets it's act together. Maybe they'll grace everyone with a new color?

Anyway this is more incentive for my next upgrade to be a Nokia with Windows Phone 7 on it..

It's kinda funny how secretive they are about releases. I remember about 20 years ago walking by Intel's research center and their building basically "looked" open to the public. Where as walking by Nike they had 15' high walls with security guards. I wonder who's better at keeping secretes now, Apple or the CIA.

I mean, all they have is pretty much the most successful company in the world
If by pretty much you mean not at all

2010 Fortune rankings
Rank, Company, Revenues($ millions), Profits($ millions)
1 Wal-Mart Stores 408,214 14,335
36 Microsoft 58,437 14,569
38 Dell 52,902 1,433
56 Apple 36,537 5,704

I like my iPhone a lot, but Apple is far far far from the most successful company in the world. Not when it comes to revenue, profits, or market share. Maybe you are the "smartless" one?

102 Google 23,650.6 6,520.4

And yet they still have higher profits than the company that sells overpriced crap. How exactly was Google a good example for your point?

Because they make money selling your information that you willingly give them for free. That is why their net profit percentage is so high.

Sorry but I love truth more than I hate Apple.

Those are dated numbers sir. Apple has now surpassed Microsoft.

How you manage to call a company unsuccessful by showing their place in the Fortune 100 is beyond me. Your head should implode from doing that.

Old numbers. And there's a few more things to consider than that, like cash in the bank (over 51 billion) Total worth over 300 billion. 6 times the worth of Facebook. Only one other company can claim that, and that's Exxon. So yes I would put them as the most successful company in the world as they have also done that in a shorter period of time than any one else. And my numbers are old too. (Back from January).

Hmm... hadn't heard that, but it sounds like a good plan to me.

I'm in the market, and would love to buy an Android phone. But all the new designs are too big/bulky for me. This may be bizarre, but I don't want a 4.3in screen - it won't fit in my pocket!

I must grudgingly admit that Apple seems to have a strong form factor that represents a good balance of usability, size, and battery life. Just wish HTC or Motorola would step up to the plate.

If you are on Verizon have you seen the Incredible 2 by HTC? To me that is the best in overall compromise (even while lacking in LTE) but I ended up with the Thunderbolt. It's actually not that bulky while living with it.

Motorola should be releasing the Droid 3 soon and it too will lack LTE but will be pretty slim and sleek. Almost all Windows Phone 7 devices fit what you are looking for though.

I Don't care, just release it on Sprint, $69 for an iPhone witha $10 smartphone fee = $79, cheapest plan in the country for an iPhone. BRING IT.

Is that a joke? Because its a bad one. So you mean a company that has one of the greatest turnarounds in modern history for a company its size? Not to mention matching verizon in customer satisfaction index ratings? Also of note, Apple has their iPhone on much lesser carriers throughout the world. Another note, Sprint is about to exploit serious coverage with network vision. Also worthy, you can bet your ass their is no privilege to Apple products as AT&T found out... don't think for a second that Apple doesn't want to add Sprint and its 51 million customers to their portfolio. Supply and demand is the real issue here and they are increasing it.

When I got my Droid, I knew Apple was in trouble. They packed more features into one hardware version than Apple has implemented in their entire update path. If Apple does not pull an 'all out' effort their sales numbers are going to take a serious hit. Apple's days of "minor" hardware updates and calling it a new model, are probably over. Adding bluetooth or autofocus for the camera (I mean really...what brainiac had the idea to implement a camera without autofocus) or finally gracing it with a LED flash...just does not cut it, anymore. And that is one of the reasons I left the iPhone. Apple comes out with a great product, but falls on it's face when it comes time to update the hardware to another model. The majority of their model updates should have been included hardware, instead they piecemeal us to death. While Android has thrown everything, but the kitchen sink, into my phone.
I would love to see Apple come out with a phone product that would make me envious...but in reality, the next model is probably going to be a big disappointment.

Apple isnt 'in trouble'. Nor is droid. They are competeing.

Also, gee, who would of thought coming out with a 'product#2' AFTER the fact of another 'product#1' creating a stable marketplace would allow this 'product#2' an easier entry and able to spend more time on features in its first implementations? HMMM

Let apple do all the work then say they suck and glory to droid. Its the DT way.

What you're describing wouldn't be a minor update-it would be at worst tied with the 3GS as the largest update the iPhone has gotten since its introduction.

Are you on the drugs?

iPhone 3GS->iPhone4 was a much larger update than iPhone3G-iPhone3GS could ever be.
