The Scene group's Complex and Duplex have offered the Xbox 360 version and PS3 version

Gamers have been waiting a long time for "Duke Nukem Forever," and that wait will be over in a little less than a week. But for some, the wait ended yesterday when the game leaked onto the internet.

With much anticipation for the new "Duke Nukem," game players were pushing to get a glimpse of 2K Games' latest creation in the series. Over the last two weeks alone, several fake "Duke Nukem Forever" files have popped up all over the web

But the real deal appeared on torrent sites like BitTorrent yesterday, with the Xbox 360 version made available by the Scene group "Complex," and the PS3 version compliments of the Scene Group "Duplex."

This leak could make or break the new game, as gamers who test it will likely spread the word as to whether it's a worthy buy or not.

"Duke Nukem Forever" will officially release on June 14 for Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows.

"Duke Nukem" is a video game series that was initially released in 1991 for MS-DOS, and focuses on protagonist Duke Nukem. "Duke Nukem ll" was released in 1993, and "Duke Nukem 3D" launched in 1996. In addition, many spin-offs like "Duke Nukem: Critical Mass" were created.

PS3 "leak" most likely fake.

If you look at the torrent file sizes, the X360 is 6.79 GB whereas the PS3 version is only 2.68 GB. I'd say that it's either a demo or fake. (Bait set by the copyright gustaffo?)

Still I just cannot play FPS on a console. I wish I could because Im going to miss out on some titles that will never be ported to the PC despite Steam being an excellent distribution outlet that prevents piracy.

I pray the console manufactures learn to add a mouse/keyboard at launch of the next generation.

I am in the same boat, but just keep practicing on a console and it does get easier.

Granted I still feel like I'm padding others kill ratios on most servers... :D

I've watched people play Portal2 on the 360 vs the PC... what a difference.

The 360 people look like seniors eating dinner at 4:30pm, with a pleasent non-distinct melody playing in the background. The PC people are like my classmates at a rave jumping around with speed, energy, and precision.

My $.02

But that's part of the reason most console fps games don't support it. The devs know a mouse user will dominate gamepad users in online play and ruin their experience.

It's too bad, because I find gamepads frustrating for FPS, but don't like PCs as a gaming platform. I don't like the fact that PC games have to compromise themselves for fear of losing sales to technological laggards. Anyone remember Baldur's Gate shipping on 6 compact discs? Diablo II on 3? Never got DVD versions to this day. Then there's the graphics cards issues because there's hundreds of different cards to account for. There's always some bug popping up on particular models that ati and nvidia are slow to fix in their ginormous unified drivers. Then there's the fact that in 2011, we still get horrific tearing by default in videos and games because Microsoft refuses to create and enforce a decent renderer environment.

You should have pointed out that shadowrun was heavily modified to level the playing field. The K+M behavior was nerfed and there was liberal auto-aim employed and a cone of fire slop so that mouse accuracy was essentially useless. Furthermore it's got heavy non-aiming elements that determine the outcome of fights. The developers of Shadowrun don't even consider it an FPS. They call it a "RPG on speed".

The K&M debate does not really exist. There is no debate. The K&M are better at FPS games period. I believe that anyone who says otherwise has some non-objective attachment to the controller (aka fanboy).

I'm both a PC and Xbox player (probably more xbox last few months but some big AAA titles are hitting PC soon so that will shift back). I'm good at both control styles. K&M sucks for fighting and sports games but is unmatched for FPS. I consider these to be facts more than just my opinion.

As much as I'd like to think that, this video shows the developer of the game SAYING the opposite. If I just blindly say that PC controls are better, I'm being no better than a religious person blindly ignoring evidence against my religion. Personally I can't stand controllers, and can't see how they can possibly compete with mouse + keyboard. But I'm not just going to ignore all the evidence against me and spout stuff about the opposite being true.

I consider this to be a far more fair view of the debate. Sure, the other team may have won by being ignorant and blindly led, but it's better than both sides arguing about something when evidence stating one over the other has been laid on the table.

There's just one major problem with consoles having a mouse/keyboard... they already do, as far as I know. The problem is though, where do you put your mouse and keyboard on the couch and use it effectively?

On a lap pad. Also, the consoles don't have a KB/M setup you can use for FPS games.

Hmm, they don't? For some reason I recall you being able to hook a kb/m up via USB--but, what do I know? I don't even own a current gen console (other than a Wii).

There are some solutions out there that are pretty good. I just saw this yesterday (in, I believe, another DailyTech article) - http://www.amazon.com/Xfps-360-Keyboard-Mouse-Adap... . In addition, reading through reviews of that device I found another option - http://www.amazon.com/Max-Shooter-Xbox-360/dp/B001... . They seem to work pretty well according to the reviews - not perfect since they're translating mouse and keyboard through controller movements, but much better than using the controller itself. I haven't used these so you'll have to read the reviews and come to your own conclusion.

Other than that I'm in the same boat. FPS with a controller just doesn't work well for me.

Eh, just play on a PC. I played RAGE at E3 yesterday and had to play on a gamepad. I can manage it but much prefer playing with a KB+M. There are some games I'll get on console, and there are others, especially FPS and RTS, that I'll play on PC. I'm not going to expect that they ditch gamepads for consoles, especially since most console players actually prefer gamepad control even for FPS (weird, I know).

It's extremely easy on the Wii using a numchuck with the other controller. Too bad the graphics on the Wii aren't good enough and too bad Sony and MS don't have something similiar.

So, assuming it is copyright bate I wonder what would happen if you downloaded it but had a receipt that you pre-bought it in 1999 or whenever but still got sued by said copyright police.

It's just a preemptive strike by the publisher to make sure they have an excuse for low sales of the game once it gets released to the public. Couldn't be that the engine is old, the development was fragmented, it gets released in a beta software state with a day 1 patch because the publisher rushed it out the door, or it's just another FPS.

All this time companies and the news has been reporting about rampant piracy on the PC and how it is killing developers desire to market games to anything but consoles. Consoles are safe, they keep telling us. Consoles are the way to go to combat piracy, they say. Yet, a week before Duke Nukem Forever comes out, the pirated version of it comes out where--FOR CONSOLES.

The difference is, most people who have PS3s and Xboxes will not be able to play this pirated version. Pretty much 100% of PC users will, though. I'd say that's a significant difference.

Saying 100% of them can play it doesn't mean 100% of them will play it and not buy it.

I can walk across the street today and shoot someone if I want to. I can also take a dump on my front lawn if I choose. If I _really_ wanted to, I could streak naked through a shopping mall.

It doesn't mean I will do it. I have 100% freedom to do so, but even still, I choose to do none of the above.

Please don't try to blanket and villify all of a community just because they all of the access to do wrong.

While the bulk of console gamers might not be able to play it, many of them can choose to hack their consoles and then be able to. Yet, many of them don't.

Forced deterrents don't always work. Sometimes, they just entice the people to go against the system to see if they can do it. Thus, lies the crux of the whole DRM problem. The deterrents only hurt the honest.

Not all of us PC users are swarthy pirates.

I'd say the problem for a lot of developers wasn't how many could do it, but rather how many were doing it. When Demigod was released wasn't there 2-4 more people trying to use the servers then copies sold, or something like it? Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if some developers quit the PC just to spite the freeloaders.

A lot of them have. If they do release it, it's just a port(usually crappy) of the console versions. Notice how very few PC games have pushed the envelope lately. Even the Crysis engine has been consolized. Everything looks the same up close but the draw distance sucks.

Indeed, and I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. My point is, the parent poster was suggesting that bringing games to consoles does not make them "safer" from piracy.

My argument is, it does make them significantly safer. For better or worse, if you don't want your software pirated, consoles are a better place to go.

Now, obviously, it is never 100% secure. But once a torrent is released of your game, it is basically 100% unsecure for PC. For PS3, it's probably less than 5%, and Xbox less than 10%. Nintendo, probably less than 30%. I am just pulling these numbers out of the air, but the point is, a PC does nothing to stop piracy of games--all the copy protection is in the game itself. The consoles have the copy protection built-in (often requiring hardware mods to bypass), thus seriously limiting the amount of piracy.

The people who will pirate it would not have spent the money on it anyways. Plus, Apogee basically screwed it's investors for as long as they could before someone finally said "enough". Now gearbox has stepped in to release a game that was never meant to be released. Of course it's going to be awful.....

RE: PS3 "leak" most likely fake.
By MrBlastman on 6/8/2011 12:59:27 PM , Rating: 4
Because you think it is awful doesn't give you the right to pirate it instead of paying for it. If you want to play it, and end up playing through the whole game--the developers deserve their share of money for your consumation of their intellectual property. It isn't as if they are charging you 65.00 to play this game. On the PC, at least right now, it is selling for 50.00 or less.

But yes, you're right, those who pirate it might not have spent the money on it anyways so it would never have equtaed to lost sales.

Oh--and don't get me wrong, I'm a little pissed off about what they have done to Duke in DNF. I played the demo that came out last week. I can't stand:

1. How they screwed us on the FOV (it was around 60-70 in the demo, but can be fixed via console commands).

2. Put mouse acceleration into the game and didn't give us an easy way to fix (should be able to be address in config files in the full game).

The next two though... they are inexcusable...

3. Halo-style health regen through Ego meter (What? Duke uses healthpacks and atomic health, not this wimpy stuff).

4. Two weapon limit (totally wtf here. Duke isn't a wimp, he carries lots of guns all at one time).

Still though, gripes aside, I'm still going to pay for it and play through it. It will at least give me some closure to waiting all these years even if it is gimped.

Originally, you were supposed to regenerate your health by being a bad-ass. I.E. kicking ass and taking names. I vividly remember Randy Pitchford talking about it in a video interview. However, it looks like they caved on even that! It's sad, but Duke will never have the sequel he deserved...

By CloudFire on 6/8/2011 11:01:28 PM , Rating: 2
I totally agree with you. I have downloaded many many games before just to try them out and see if I like them or not. If I don't, I uninstall and delete the file forever. However, I will purchase the game if it fits two of my criteria:

1. I have played the game to the very end.

2. I have played it and enjoyed it for at least 20 hours (mainly rpg genre for this case).

I am a supporter of great companies/games, and if their product intrigues me enough to fit any of those 2 criteria, they will get my business.
