Google's mobile OS now dominates 36 percent of the national smartphone market

Android's dominance in the United States smartphone market continues to grow, boasting a market share of 36 percent, according to Nielsen.

The news comes in yesterday's blog post on NielsenWire, which shows Apple's iOS in second place, trailing Android by 10 percent and just barely edging out RIM's BlackBerry by 3 percent. Windows Mobile (not to be confused with Windows Phone 7) is a distant fourth place, with just 9 percent of total market share. HP's WebOS and Symbian both claim 2 percent, while Windows Phone 7 takes a paltry 1 percent — equal to that of Palm OS.

In addition, Android users also are the most data-hungry smartphone users. "In the first quarter of 2011, Android smartphone owners consumed an average of 582 MB of data each month, compared to 492 MB for iPhone owners," Nielsen reports.

And while Android users consume more data, iPhone users are more prone to downloading apps, streaming online music, and watching video or mobile TV.

The new data also signifies the proliferation of smartphones, in general, with 37 percent of mobile consumers owning one.

iPhone jumped the shark

iPhone jumped the shark about 6 months ago the AOL image they adopted of knowing whats best for consumers is starting to take effect. Droid sales should send a message that users want a memory slot, flash, and freedom from Steve Jobs. Lets see if Apple gets the message with the iPhone 5. Not holding my breath.

NOBODY I know is considering Apple products (Tablet, Phone, or PC) its like Android pushed Apple right of the edge of the earth and the only tiny voice heard is that of Tony Swash.

Yeah, clearly all those flavors of Droid phones are superior.

Yes...Yes they are. A Blue iPhone would be superior but it would clash with the black turtlenecks so no Blue.

There is a function on these devices called a PHONE. Shouldn't the iPhone be able to make a Phone call without holding it pinky out? Sounds reasonable it is marketed as a phone? I guess it just works if you hold it pinky out that's not a design flaw its a pride statement and I support you girl not gonna judge.

Shouldn't you be able to expand the memory on an iPhone without having to sell it and buy a new one?

Are you joking? Have you ever owned and iPhone for more than a year or two? Do you know anyone that has? A user replaceable battery is a good thing! I have replaced many an iPhone battery for my friends, and had to do the same same for MY iPhone.... it's a major pain in the butt and not worth paying Apple to do, it ends up being a forced upgrade.

I rather not remove the battery at all and have it last all day.

Don't confuse Droid with Android. Droid is the name of a specific phone while Android is the OS that it runs. Battery life is a hardware issue or the people don't understand that playing movies for 10 hours straight without charging kills a cell battery.

I don't really care either way about Android or iOS since I have my WP7 which I think is awesome.

I would guess that less than 10% of Android (not Droid, that's the name of a particular model) users made their choices based on your reasoning. Most of them choose because they are cheaper than an iPhone and are available on more networks across the country.

Android's rise can largely be attributed to the wide selection on handsets the OS can be found on. Plus, every three months or so a carrier can market a new Android phone as the best one EVAR. Apple doesn't release new iPhones often enough to compete on that front.

I like my iPhone, I liked my EVO4G before it, and I may yet in the future switch back to Android. Steve Jobs has nothing to do with my decision making process. Nor do super slow microSD cards play into my decision making process. Flash is one where I agree, though as a web developer, I am happy to see more website getting creative.
