Former Google CEO Says He "Screwed Up," Regrets Not Joining Forces with Facebook

Despite Google and Facebook's fierce competition, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt wishes he would have pushed harder for an alliance with the social networking giant
When it comes to social networking, it's pretty much understood that
Facebook reigns supreme
. While some companies have taken the "can't beat them, join them" approach, Google Inc. Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt is beating himself up for not leading Google in that direction as well.
Eric Schmidt was the CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011. He was also elected to Apple's board of directors in 2006, but resigned in 2009 because of the growing competition between Apple and Google. Now, he is the executive chairman of Google.
Recently, at the AllThingsD's D9 Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Schmidt reflected on his time as Google CEO, saying he "screwed up" in the social networking area.
Google competes with Facebook
as far as online advertising goes. Facebook was also able to provide a better social network for people to connect with friends and family, and during his time as Google CEO, Schmidt regrets not pushing harder to develop an alliance with the social networking giant.
"I clearly knew I had to do something and I failed to do it," said Schmidt. "The CEO should take responsibility. I screwed up."
Facebook, instead, joined forces with Microsoft in an alliance that included web search. Schmidt insinuated that Microsoft was not worthy of the position, saying that Microsoft "is not driving the consumer revolution in the minds of consumers." Instead, Schmidt believes other companies, such as Google, Amazon,
and Facebook, are the heavyweights in the consumer technology ring.
"Each of them is a consumer brand that provides something that you can't do otherwise," said Schmidt.
Microsoft also beat Google to a deal with Nokia earlier this year, which will allow Microsoft to provide software for its phones.
In April 2011, Schmidt stepped down as CEO, and Google Co-Founder Larry Page took over. Schmidt took responsibility for Google's inability to partner with Facebook in an effort to help the company "
excel in social media
