"Duke Nukem Forever" will be released on June 10 in Europe, Japan and Australia, and June 14 in North America

After over a decade of waiting for a follow-up to "Duke Nukem 3D", 2K Games has announced that "Duke Nukem Forever" has gone gold in time for its upcoming release date.

"Duke Nukem" is a video game series that was originally released in 1991 for MS-DOS, and revolves around its protagonist, Duke Nukem. In 1993, "Duke Nukem ll" was released for MS-DOS and Game Boy Color, and in 1996, "Duke Nukem 3D" was released for several different platforms like MS-DOS, Nintendo 64, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

From 1998 to 2011, several spin-offs were created for "Duke Nukem" from "Duke Nukem: Time to Kill" to "Duke Nukem: Critical Mass."

For nearly two decades, different video game developers have been working on the sequel to the 1996 "Duke Nukem 3D," called "Duke Nukem Forever." From 1997 to 2009, game developer 3D Realms worked on the game, and from 2009 to present, Triptych Games and Gearbox Software have collaborated on the newest Nukem release. The original publisher of the "Duke Nukem" series was Apogee Software, but from 2010 to present, 2K Games has taken over.

"Duke Nukem Forever" will be a first-person shooter available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Screenshots of the new game started to leak to the public in early 2007 after several delays, and in 2009, 3D Realms called it quits on the game. But in 2010, it was announced that plans for the game were back in action, and two months ago, yet another delay postponed the game's development.

But now, 2K Games has announced that "Duke Nukem Forever" has gone gold.

"Today marks an amazing day in the annals of gaming lore, the day where the legend of 'Duke Nukem Forever' is finally complete and it takes that final step towards becoming a reality," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games.

"Duke Nukem Forever" will be released on June 10 in Europe, Japan and Australia, and June 14 in North America.

European release first is BOGUS

Duke... Is an American. He fights for American babes... in America. Yet, for some strange reason, Gearbox decides to release the game in Europe on a Thursday on June 10th, and makes us Americans wait a few more days for the 14th (thus gipping us out of a weekend)?

That isn't right! He's an American icon. We should get the release first. Duke should also come out on a Thursday, just to thumb his nose at conformity with everything coming out on a Tuesday.

Shenanigans I say!

I'll pop you with Duke's shotgun if you start singing that awful song... (and yes, you're right, it _is_ a Friday).

That last line is invalid...the Duke takes them ALL! XD Now I need to go find a solid desk to bang my head on to get that tone removed before it sinks in more...

I fully agree!

Europe, Japan and Australia?? I can't think of three other places Duke Nukem would rather NOT be than those. That's why there are no levels that take place in those countries, not even the aliens would bother to land there.

they might be doing it to have time to release the first patch before duke comes home.

This is just wrong.

$20 says it's on the newsgroups before 10th now...LOL.

While happy NON DRM loving customers fork over money for Witcher 2 at gog dot com even when it's EASY to pirate (no DRM duh, just copy it - but it's #5 in sales including consoles, and it's a PC EXCLUSIVE - for now - so top 5 in sales with NO PROTECTION - and only sold on PC's - heck they didn't even drop the price, doesn't DRM cost? I thought that's why we pay $60 instead of $30 before all this crap), these guys take an American icon and launch him on foreign soil. SERIOUSLY? Gog even did foreigners a favor by axing IP's to kill price fixing on foreign soil (I know, they're polish - but they got everybody out of paying extra over USD).

So if your DRM doesn't kill you, I'm sure the June 9-14 will at least hurt. If I have to put steam on my PC this game won't be bought. PERIOD. As a PC tech, I've done enough re-installs for people due to STEAM (don't believe me, read amazon game complaints). While I'm unafraid of re-installing (it's part of my job...LOL), I have no desire to do it on purpose, nor do I wish to be forced on the net to get the game going (when will they realized this ticks us off? - I'm sure the reg servers will go down, just like always).

/fires up alt.binz just in case it comes with DRM. For those who really don't want steam, I'm sure gamecopyworld will have a solution ready for you within 2 weeks of release. If you can wait to install, this should cremate STEAM on your retail copy. Then again spore made it onto torrents/newsgroups before the box (protection=pilfer - going to get worse with gog around...ROFL). Here's hoping more companies follow GOG and put steam out of business. If I have to lose Valve. Tough luck. It's taken what, 13 years for DNF? You could have at least left off DRM. Let's see DRM (DNF) or no DRM (The Witcher 2) to fight with this month? Not going to be DNF... :)
