Got an iPad, want to switch

For me a tablet is a replacement for a laptop. Before, I used my laptop almost exclusively for consumption of media, not creation. A tablet is much more suited for that task.
With the coming hybrids like the Asus Transformer, the tablet even becomes usable for creation as soon as the software side catches up. Google Docs, Windows 8 ARM and Microsoft Office 365 all look promising.
In a further future, your tablet will also become the desktop when coupled to a monitor. Smartphones are too limited in screen size on the go. I see a bright future for tablets.
