Samsung files lawsuits in three countries, citing 10 patent violations

Earlier this week, we reported that Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung for copying certain design aspects of its popular iPhone. "Samsung chose to copy Apple's technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products," Apple claimed in the lawsuit.

Unfazed by Apple's lawsuit, Samsung responded that Apple was in fact infringing on some of its patents, adding, "Samsung will respond actively to this legal action taken against us through appropriate legal measures to protect our intellectual property."

Samsung is now backing up those words with some legal action of its own. The company has filed lawsuits in South Korea, Japan, and Germany citing ten cases of patent infringement by Apple.

Samsung added that this legal action will "ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business."

According to Reuters, Samsung claims that Apple is violating its patents related to "power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission, and wireless data communication technology."

Apple and Samsung are close business partners, and Apple is currently Samsung's second largest customer. Thanks to strong sales of the iPad and iPhone, Reuters expects Apple to become Samsung's largest customer during 2011.

Great choice for the Headline picture.

This Samsung/Apple fight is going to getting good. Too bad these patent disputes usually get so drawn out and/or settle before a court decision is made.

Anyone have any insight as to why Samsung filed their lawsuits in South Korea, Japan, and Germany, when Apple filed theirs against Samsung here in the US?

They have friends in those countries that will make it nearly impossible for a company such as Apple to have a chance. Apple will also have to show up in those countries which is costly and time consuming for all involved. Basically it seems to be to remind Apple that they play on an international field and that if companies want to, they can make life hell for Apple.

And considering that Samsung is about 3x or larger than Apple... They have the financial backings to bring it onto an International field.

That and Samsung have fingers in so many pies in Tech-land with so many different patents and products they could probably make things even worst for Apple.

I think that Apple will learn a valuable lesson here that other companies will fight back.

While I am no Apple fan, I will say that they might have grounds for this. Samsung is no stranger to outright stealing IP and design patents. They are probably the most sued company on earth for this type of thing.

consider how ridiculous Apple's patents are, I would say both companies equally suck.

According to Korean news, they're preparing a bigger one here in the US to 'properly' retaliate/address/shove-a-finger-up-jobs.

This was my thought exactly. They're taking their time finding more patents Apple infringes on in the US and then slam them with an even more massive lawsuit. Apple might have awoken the sleeping Giant that Samsung is.

You guys realize though that this is just the patent version of MAD - mutually assured destruction. The big guys have extensive patent portfolios making it horribly expensive not to cross-license. So they'll file suits against each other, but eventually cross-license.

Meanwhile, the little guy without any or with few patents gets sued into oblivion before he can present a serious threat. Competition is successfully thwarted.

Patent portfolios work well to keep new players from entering the home turf of the big players. And if that misses there is always the vaporware* or the lawyer flood**.

*Don't buy X from the little guy. We will soon release similar X but ours will be safe and the standard because we are big. That "soon" may be years coming is another matter.

**See how Sony threatened to sue Link Sang in every EU country as separate trials = instant win.

Apple's probably hoping to settle with favorable terms rather than win anything in court. Hopefully, though, they end up getting reamed by Samsung.
Not saying this out of specific animosity towards Apple. I'm more just hoping that a huge loss in court would slow down some of the patent troll stuff.
