Apple continues its upwards march in the consumer electronics business

It's should come as no surprise that Apple's latest earnings announcement once again exceeded all expectations. Apple has been on a roll quarter after quarter, and its Q2 earnings were no exception.

The company today announced record fiscal Q2 revenue of $24.67 billion USD and a net profit of $5.99 billion USD. Those numbers are far ahead of Q2 2010 when Apple reported revenue of $13.5 billion USD and net profit of $3.07 billion USD.

Apple witnessed a 28 percent year-over-year growth in Mac sales to 3.76 million units while iPhone sales grew 113 percent to 18.65 million units during the quarter. Apple's newest booming business sector, the iPad, had sales of 4.69 million units.

If there was a lone cloud in Apple's sunny report, it was the fact that iPod sales were down 17 percent to 9.02 million units compared to last year.

“With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we’re firing on all cylinders,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.”

Apple's iPhone numbers were no doubt helped by the addition of Verizon as the second carrier in the United States, and Apple's new iPad 2 was launched during the fiscal second quarter.

Apple is rumored to be readying a revamp of its popular iMac family and the next generation iPhone is set to make its debut in September.

Not every person who dislikes Apple is a basement dwelling troll. We're not in love with Bill Gates and we don't necessarily have a fetish for open source. I think the difference between Apple fanatics and Apple haters is that maybe some of us like think we make our purchasing decisions based on a rational criteria of performance or value or a combination of the two. At least from my point of view Apple fanatics seem to make purchases based on vanity, marketing or hearsay. If I've missed some reason I should be buying an Apple product please correct me.

There's an old saying about fools and their money parting ways. If anyone tears up when Apple makes money its because we know what that implies about the bulk of humanity.

Listen troll, do not wave those cheeto sticks in my face. Oh wait they are fingers ;-p

Seriously though, when the iPhone shipped did you refuse to buy it because you hate Apple and you were gonna wait 3 years for an Android phone? It really was a magical jesus phone from 5 years in the future. Each $ Apple made on it in that time was a $ you simply could not spend on a competing phone cuz there simply weren't any.

I do not mind if you sat out the iPad because its value is more dependent on the user and the competition is only 1-2 years late. For me it actually paid for itself by making my NY Times habit paperless and free till a month ago.

So, just like you don't want people to think you eat only cheetos and coke in your moms basement all day, I do not want people to think I am dumb because I choose to buy iPads and iPhones. Why? Because I look around and they were quite cost competitive to their sibling products when they shipped.
