Rumor says Wii will get a big price cut
For a long time Nintendo was riding high on the gaming market with the Wii and the DSi portable console. The hardware sold well and the games sold well along with the hardware. Over the last several months, Nintendo has found itself facing dropping profits and some big losses as the sluggish economy reduced sales and the soaring yen hurt its financials.
Nintendo is trying all sorts of things to get the consumer interested in the Wii again as they were then the console first launched. A new rumor is circulating that the Wii may be getting a price cut soon. ZDNet reports that Engadget claims Nintendo will be cutting the price of the Wii to $150 on May 15. That is only about a month ahead of the E3 gaming show in California.
Another possibility other than just trying to increase sales of the current Wii is that Nintendo may be ready to unveil a new console at E3. However, that is not likely by most accounts. A new gaming console would help spur the sagging sales that Nintendo is facing and get the gamer interested in the Nintendo console for their home again. Nintendo is also going after non-traditional gamer categories with advertising featuring Helen Mirren to attract the over 50 gamer crowd.
