Rumor says Wii will get a big price cut
For a long time Nintendo was riding high on the gaming market with the Wii and the DSi portable console. The hardware sold well and the games sold well along with the hardware. Over the last several months, Nintendo has found itself facing dropping profits and some big losses as the sluggish economy reduced sales and the soaring yen hurt its financials.
Nintendo is trying all sorts of things to get the consumer interested in the Wii again as they were then the console first launched. A new rumor is circulating that the Wii may be getting a price cut soon.
claims Nintendo will be
cutting the price
of the Wii to $150 on May 15. That is only about a month ahead of the E3 gaming show in California.
Another possibility other than just trying to increase sales of the current Wii is that Nintendo may be ready to unveil a new console at E3. However, that is not likely by most accounts. A new gaming console would help spur the sagging sales that Nintendo is facing and get the gamer interested in the Nintendo console for their home again. Nintendo is also going after non-traditional gamer categories with advertising featuring
to attract the over 50 gamer crowd.

This is long overdue. Nintendo has waited too long and allowed too much mediocre software to degrade the Wii. Strong hardware margins are nice but there is so much more money to be made in software if you can just keep growing your base.
$150 is still high. Nintendo could drop the Wii base model to $100 without any real pain. Yes, it really is that cheap to produce. A die shrink of the chip set could reduce the cost still more after engineering expenses are met. compared to the competition this is extremely dated technology. But old technology can be fine when the price is below the level of purchasing on a whim. Which they need for continued growth if a new improved model with HD support isn't happening within 2012.

Seriously. I thought it was already $150 or less. It's ancient tech these days, and honestly just about everyone who wants one has one. At this point it needs to drop to $99 to be a near-impulse buy for folks who could afford a novelty system splurge at the spur of a moment, which generally means less than three figures on the sticker price.
I'd actually be somewhat tempted by a $99 Wii just for that Goldeneye remake they put out... last year was it? N64 nostalgia could possibly convince a $99 purchase (even better if it came with the game).

The game isn't that great. It's fine for a wii title but it's more call of duty than goldeneye, though it does feature a substantial amount of throwback content for nostalgia purposes.
the wii definitely should be 99$
, though. There's no headlining software to be released for most of the year, and its current quality software library is pretty pathetic and mainly consists of nintendo titles.

Agreed. I don't have one, and would only consider one at $99 or less.
