Lexus goes bold with GS redesign

That face! Lexus may be looking to get a leg up on the competition -- especially with Infiniti firing on all cylinders with its new M-Hybrid -- but the new LF-Gh may just scare all of the other luxury hybrids into submission upon first glance.

The new LF-Gh concept is a thinly disguised preview of what the next generation Lexus GS will look like. Although this concept is of the hybrid version of the next generation GS, the conventional GS won't stray too far from this design.

The menacing front grille is no doubt what will draw the most stares from people, however. It seems as though luxury makers are going for bigger is better when it comes to grilles (we're looking at you, Audi), but Lexus takes the cake here. Looking like the Predator's gaping maw, this will probably be one of the most divisive grille treatments in recent memory, save for the 2009 Acura TL.

Moving around to the side, the LF-Gh looks to be strongly channeling E60 BMW 5-Series, although some of Lexus' "L-Finesse" design language also tries to peek through.

"For this concept, Lexus designers studied characteristics that are often considered contradictory and difficult to execute together," said Kengo Matsumoto, general manager, Lexus Design Division, Toyota Motor Corporation. "The captivating design of the LF-Gh concept examines the possibility of balancing what are normally opposing qualities, such as style and functionality."

"Customers have been waiting for a bold concept like this from Lexus," said Mark Templin, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. "We look forward to their feedback and integrating some of these exciting design features into future Lexus vehicles."

Lexus is being awfully quiet about the LF-Gh's powertrain specifications, but the company will no doubt spill the beans at the concept's official reveal on May 1.

The front end of this concept is really nice and agressive but the rest of the car is rather plain-looking. It would be nice to see more aggressive lines down the side of it. The article is correct in comparing it to a BMW 5-series it's just as boring as BMW's styling.

The rest could be slightly edgier.

Not to mention the overhangs look horrible. This car could easily have 5" more wheelbase while keeping the same length.

Not sure what you mean. In terms of where the wheels are located and how the fenders hang over them I think it looks fine.

bet that's a weight saving design... longer wheelbase probably means considerably more weight reinforcing the entire unibody

No...

Pedestrian Crash Safety requires there to be significant front overhang... even in a RWD car...

I dunno what do you do, add a completely functionless styled spoiler to match the front? Maybe some fake intake scoops in front of the rear wells? Seems like it would be hard to do tastefully. Maybe just a more angled rear end altogether (CTS comes to mind)?

Yeah thats what I mean. Make the rear lines a little edgier instead of as curved. Fake or even real scoops for the rear wheels would look retarded.

That would make it a little nicer on the eyes. Straighten up the back end and make it less "busy".

I guess I'm the opposite on this, I prefer the smooth curves to the sharp angles. I guess is why I like the Pontiac Solstice better than the Saturn Sky styling wise.

Disagree. The Sky looks way better. The Solstice is too buggy looking.

Co-signed. Front looks great, but the rest doesn't match the feel the front gives off...

It's a Lexus. The ONLY car they made that stood out from a crowd was the LFA, and even then, not so much. Rented a few different gens/models and own an older model myself. Lexus is the most boring car company in the world, but I'll be darned if I can find another company this consistently comfy.

Actually my buddy with an 06 IS350 thinks my 06 GTO seats are more comfortable.

I have sat in many Lexus vehicles and I have to say their seats aren't nearly as comfortable as many other manufacturers.

For me his aren't bad but they're too soft in the lumbar area.

Sorry that grill is totally stupid.
If it's a hybrid it doesn't need as much grill space.
This is a bad as the smilling Mazda's!

That grill looks retarded. Way to elongated.

I was getting thoughts of a Cylon as much as Predator.

lol, i'm an owner of one of those smiling mazdas!

I really like the car, and don't even mind the front much...but every now and then I see another 2010+ 3 coming from the opposite direction and I think "dammit"
