The images, which look like blurry camera photos, show an iPod touch with what may be a non-physical home button

Some questionable images of an iPod touch have hit the web, leaving tech sites and consumers wondering if they are leaked photos of an iPod touch with a capacitive home button.

Apple's iPod touch, which is a personal digital assistant, portable media player and Wi-Fi mobile platform, was first introduced in 2007. As of September 2009, Apple sold over 45 million of these devices. So far, four generations of the iPod touch have been released, each with software updates and added features such as a 0.7 megapixel fixed focus camera.

The physical home button has been a staple in the iPod touch design throughout all four generations, but these new pictures show otherwise. The images, which look like blurry camera photos, show an iPod touch with what may be a non-physical home button. It also has a DVT-1 badge, 128 GB of memory, an aluminum back that resembles the description of the new iPhone 5's back, and is marked model MC550LL.

In addition, the photos indicate that the touch is running firmware 4.2.1MC14, which is an older version. The fact that it is running older firmware has lead many to believe that this model has been sitting around for quite some time, and was only used as a test subject.

While a capacitive home button may decrease wear and tear with use on the iPod touch, it's unclear if Apple plans to make this feature a reality, or if these pictures are even leaked images of such a feature. But it doesn't seem completely out of the question since Apple is making changes to its other iPod products, such as adding a camera to the iPod nano once again while keeping the body slimmer and smaller body.

a none physical button would be stupid on the touch, all you need to do is put your finger close to the button and you will exit any program, movie etc. that you are using, which will become extremely frustrating. What apple needs to do is increase the screen size into the 4-5 inch range.

Agreed. A touch-sensitive home-button would be madness as it would be all to easy to accidentally hit. I'm not convinced that dodgy picture is even showing a capacitative sensor anyway, as it could just be a less obvious physical button.

I'd also be concerned about resetting the device, as the second physical button is needed when doing a full reset.
