Sells ten times faster than the original iPad

According to Reuters, Apple's iPad 2 sold one million units in its launch weekend, surpassing the milestone almost 10 times as fast as its predecessor.

The iPad 2 went on sale last Friday at Apple, Verizon, and AT&T stores, as well as Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy. Large crowds were reported across the United States, with more than 500 people queued up at Apple's flagship San Francisco store and roughly another 800 at its Manhattan location. The crowds even attracted gawkers.

"Our field checks over the weekend indicate that the iPad 2 sold out at every Apple and non-Apple store we contacted," Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White wrote in a research note. "In fact, all the stores had worked through iPad 2 inventory by Saturday afternoon, and there were no new iPad 2 deliveries on Sunday."

White told Reuters that the iPad 2 could potentially have sold one million units in its first weekend, a feat that took 28 days for the original when it hit the market last year. Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland echoed White's prediction.

With the launch, Apple appears to have secured its number one spot in the tablet market for the time being, cooling the momentum that tablets from other manufacturers such as Motorola and Samsung were beginning to gain.

Apple is expected to retain 61 percent of the lucrative tablet market for 2011, according J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moscowitz. According to Moscowitz, other companies will have trouble attracting customers the way Apple has.

The iPad 2 is set to launch worldwide on March 25.

Why people pat theirselves on the back regarding some brain dead obvious predictions gives me a nice chuckle. I wonder do the same folks turn their friends/families and go -- you know I bet its going to rain...again....someday...

I mean who HONESTLY thought Apple would have any problems moving Ipad stock (and I'm not just talking about Ipad2) ?

Likewise, I give no one points for genius to predict as time moves on we will move away from full sized desktops and laptops... I mean you are pretty dense if you can't piece that future mystery together....all signs are pointing to that direction.

NOW....whether it's successful and long lived -- that's a different issue....

But yeah, its a no brainer to say in the not far future folks will have table like devices that are full desktop replacements for their home offices...heck just make tablet units that have connections for full sized mouse/keyboards and HDMI for full size LED/LCD hook ups and bam....who needs a desktop (aside from ethusiast/gamer types)....

The idea your last paragraph suggests is quite interesting, and we are already pretty much there, in some respects.

What are those all-in-one touch screen PCs and iMacs? They are sold as desktops, but they are essentially large tablet PCs with a built in stand, and a plug a keyboard and mouse.

Why can't tablets be a smaller, portable version of that, but you just leave the stand, keyboard and mouse on the desktop?

Screen size I guess. People will slays want a big screen, so I'm not sure how that's going to be sorted. HDMI outputs will let you run a duel monitor set-up perhaps? Who knows.

99% of the people on this site. Sadly though, it was mostly wishful thinking, in that sad way that happens some times when their are entrenched fans and haters about. I'm not sure that many really stopped to think about whether the iPad would be successful, but just wanted to say that it wouldn;t be, as if saying it would make it true.

It could be p**5ing it down out side as some people were talking to their friends and family, but if Steve jobs or Apple released a statement saying that it will rain again, there are some who would deny it, just for the sake of it.

Sad, but true.
