iTunes Home Sharing
Finalized version of iOS 4.3 is now available to developers

Apple just announced its iPad 2 yesterday, and today the company is providing the finalized version of iOS 4.3 to developers to prepare for its March 11 rollout. IOS 4.3 will be made available for the iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4 (GSM), iPod touch 3G/iPod touch 4G, and iPad/iPad 2. Users of the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 will have to wait a bit longer for the update.

IOS 4.3 bring a number of new features including:

  • GSM-based iPhones will get the 5-device Wi-Fi Personal Hotspot functionality that was added for CDMA iPhone 4s.
  • Improved AirPlay functionality (third-party apps can support AirPlay) opens up over-the-air multimedia streaming from your iOS devices to your HDTV. AirPlay will also allow you to stream pics/movies from the Photos app.
  • Mobile Safari performance has been improved with a new Nitro JavaScript engine (up to 2x performance increase).
  • ITunes Home Sharing allows you to share your entire iTunes Library (Mac or PC) to any iOS device wirelessly.
  • The ability to use the switch on the side of the iPad to change toggle orientation lock or as a mute switch.

Developers can grab iOS 4.3 Gold Master here. Everyone else will have to wait until March 11 or search torrent sites for the ISPW file.

I would argue for at least six to ten years. That's about how long it takes for storage capacities for mp3 players to double, and thus the customer to actually have a need to purchase a new one.

It says a lot about today's culture that an MP3 player should be retired after 30 months, or that it shouldn't warrant support any longer.

If you were to ask your grandparents, they expected a company to stand behind their product. My grandmother had a Singer sewing machine for over 25 years. It shouldn't be too much to ask for a piece of electronics to last for at least a tenth of that.

Here's the ? or problem with this: This is a 4.x update, not a complete version update. What prevents such a minor update from being released on the 3G?

Yeah sure, Windows 2000/XP/Vista got all sorts of free product updates that unlocked features and provided new functionality.

If you own an Graphics Card, new drivers can and have offered additional functionality. An ancient Geforce 8200 just recently got flash acceleration support, for free.

My PS3 now has this new "function" called 3D Blu-Ray play back. and I got my PS3 over 3 years ago, make that 4 actually.

and My Windows 7 is now 2 years old, and first service pack just came out with more functions and better hardware support.

Want me to name more?

When was your PS3 discontinued?

I have number of components - graphics cards, motherboards - in some of my PCs that are discontinued for more than 3 years but still getting new drivers and firmware, as required. We are talking about nForce 4 generation of motherboards and early PCIe graphics cards (though wouldn't be surprised to see updated drivers for AGP cards as well).

Plus, Windows 7 is running on hardware older than 5 years. Heck, even my 10 years old Toshiba Satellite 1000 was capable of running Windows 7, slow as it was.

Why do you need to retire your 30 month old iPod? It still works doesn't it? Should I complain that my iPad doesn't have the iPad2's faster processor or cameras? My iPad gets retired after 12 months!! Oh noes!!!
