The Motorola Xoom will be made available today, and fresh details on the device continue to spill out. The latest bit of information on the device concerns its ability to be upgraded to support LTE.

We already reported that the LTE modem upgrade will be free for customers, but we have now learned – courtesy of a new Verizon website – that customers will have to be without their Xoom for six days while the upgrade is performed by qualified technicians. Since the current 3G modem module is not readily accessible by the user, the entire tablet has to be taken apart to perform the upgrade. 

On the plus side, Verizon does provide free shipping to and from their “upgrade facility”. 

Although it is not required, Verizon recommends that you backup your data before sending your Xoom in just in case something goes terribly wrong during the upgrade process. 

We’re glad to see that Verizon is providing the LTE module upgrade for free (and footing the bill for shipping costs), but it’s slightly inconvenient for consumers to wait six days while the Xoom is being upgraded – especially considering that tablets are starting to become indispensible tools for many people. 

There is no exact word on when the LTE upgrades will be made available, but Verizon states that it will be available “shortly after launching the Motorola Xoom.”
