Still some speculation iPad follow-up may be delayed until June

According to a Reuters source, the Apple iPad 2 is expected to launch March 2, despite speculation that the release of the tablet may be delayed to June.

A source told Reuters that Apple is planning a release schedule similar to the first iPad, which went on sale April 2010. Apple is slated to host an event March 2, where another source says the company will unveil the new iteration of the popular tablet.

But, according to a Yuanta Securities note, the next version would come out two months later than the original iPad because component makers were forced to alter their production processes after Apple made changes to the design

In other tablet news, it appears that Verizon will be charging new Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab users their first month's data charges at activation. This policy will of course have no effect on Wi-Fi-only models.

Except iPad 1 doesn't have 720p resolution. The iPad is 1024x768, while 720p is 1368x720. There is a huge difference because whenver you watch stardard aspect ration HD content you get black buffer bars on the top and bottom, restricting you vertical resoluion to 574 pixels which is 25% less than 720p .

IMO the iPad 2 doesn't need retina dpi, it doesn't even need 1080p. But what it DOES need is to be at least proper 720p.

I don't like the idea of a 16:9 tablet. I don't know why some people think these are just used for viewing movies and Tv shows. That's the much smaller part of what I do with my iPad. For everything else, a small screen with 16:9 is worse than 4:3, which the current iPad has. I'm typing this on my iPad now, and with a 16:9 screen, I'd see less of what I was typing. Why would I want that?

Most things, including web browsing, are better with 4:3. My desktop monitor is different. It's far larger, with a much higher resolution. There, I can use 16:9, though I still prefer the older 16:10 format.

We could use a retina display with double the Rez for this. With small type sizes, and the close viewing distance, I can see the blurriness associated with the difficulty of rendering type with a low number of pixels. As Apple, smartly, won't go to intermediate resolutions, the next screen will be double the resolution. When? Likely next year. The screen is here, it's just to difficult to make in the tens of millions Apple will need over the next 12 months. That will also enable true 1080p, and then some.

I agree. If I want to watch HD movies, I'll do it on the my HDTV, not a tablet. If I want to work on two documents side-by-side, I'll do it on my laptop/desktop with a widescreen monitor, not a tablet.

I see tablets as more of a replacement for the clipboard and paper notebook, doing/viewing one thing at a time. If I want to view web pages and PDFs on a tablet, I want something closer to the size of a piece of paper, which the 4:3 aspect ratio approximates better. In particular I have my sheet music library scanned and stored in digital format. They displayed beautifully on my old 4:3 tablet PC in portrait mode. On my new 16:9 laptop and the 16:9 tablets I've tried, there's a lot of wasted space at the top and bottom in portrait mode, and the pages are too small in landscape mode. If I make the pages fit the screen width in landscape mode, that means I have to manually scroll down the page as I play, which requires a third hand when playing the piano.
