SP1 is now available for download or through Windows Update

For those of you running Windows 7 (and that's likely a huge portion of DailyTech readers), Microsoft has officially made Service Pack 1 (SP1) available to the public. This move comes just a week after Microsoft provided SP1 to MSDN/TechNet subscribers.

“Remember - for Windows 7, SP1 will help keep your PCs well supported by delivering ongoing updates, many of which have been made previously available through Windows Update,” said Microsoft Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows Team Blog. “It does, however, include client-side support for RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory which are two new virtualization features enabled in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.” 

The download for the x86 version weighs in at 537.8MB while the x64 version comes in at a hefty 903.2MB.

It's not about data.
Windows service pack will refuse to install if you haven't got enough space at C, and there are times you just can't clear enough for a service pack install. The space required is more than what it will need, and the size of the SP. It also have backup copies of dll files in case you perform roll back, and that increase space requirement furthre. It's also not smart enough to use other drives as temporary locations.

In days of vista I had 16GB SSD, and it would refuse to install SP1. It gave me an error, partly due to me tricking Windows by moving literally the system temp folder using NTFS junctions to another drive, including Winsxs folder, which was consuming 4GB at that time. It was desparate as no way I could squeeze up, without even program installed at that time, enough space for service pack update.

Finally I had to do a clean install of Vista and immdediately update.

Guys, Relax.

The service pack is not 900MB. That's the size of the network redistributable package. It includes X86, AMD64 and X64 packages, debug symbols, etc. It's what IT admins would use to deploy SP1 across their network. Us, mortals, connect through Windows Update and find it is much more smaller than that. Average around 150mb.

Actually, the redistributable package for x64 is 903MB, the separate pacakge for x86 is 537MB, and the IA64 version is 511MB. This is all from the ISO that was made available to Volume License last week. There's no distiction between Intel x64 and AMD64 and Microsoft's x64 OS's even identify their archictecture as AMD64 when running Intel processors supporting EM64T.

So, the 903MB isn't for the combined content.

Just relocate your NTUNINSTALL folders to a different partition, and chances are you will free up more than enough.
