Motorola's CEO spills the beans on Xoom pricing

Reuters today confirmed what we already know about the Motorola Xoom (3G/CDMA) -- it will be priced at $799 unsubsidized through Verizon. There will also be a Wi-Fi-only model available for $599.

"Competing with Apple you have to deliver premium products," said Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility.

The $799 price tag for the Xoom 3G will get you 32GB of storage space, a 10" display, and a dual-core processor. Despite it devilishly good looks and sleek Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" operating system, the data plans for the tablet may be a little bit harder to swallow. Data packages are reported to start at $20/month for a mere 1GB and top out at $80/month for 10GB.

Motorola's Xoom will officially launch next Thursday.

Jha also chimed in on the whole Nokia/Microsoft saga, stating, "I am as focused on Android as I ever have been. As a result of Nokia adopting Microsoft it's possible that some of the other players concentrate on Android," Jha continued.

These comments come just a day after another Motorola exec expressed no interest in adopting Windows Phone 7 for its smartphones. "I don't envision us using Microsoft. I would never say never but it's not something we're entertaining now," said Verizon Corporate VP Christy Wyatt.

Ridiculous data plans....

Who in their right mind would pay $80/month for a 10GB cap. In that case simply buy the Clear hot spot device and pay $49/month for unlimited for any devices around you with Wifi.

I guess these cell phone companies clearly do not want people's business with those outrageous charges for data.

$8 per GB is insane, and that's generously assuming you use the full 10GB every month. Forget SSDs, you could build a controller that takes sticks of ram instead of a hard drive and it would very nearly be cheaper to supply it with RAM than it would be to fill it with information over that link. Insane is the only word that even begins to describe it.

Even though I kinda like the hardware for this tablet, I hope it fails and fails hard. Vote with your dollars, or lack thereof.

Anyone buying a VZW standalone dataplan. 10GB for $80 is their top plan for a 3/4G USB modem; their other plan is 5GB for $50(?). They're currently not making any distinction between 3 and 4g data pricing.

You do understand that AT&T have the exact same data plan rates?

The only difference is that Verizon isn't going to charge more for LTE.

Who needs to charge more when your users can use up their full monthly allowance in a whopping 2.5 hours. (Assuming an average down speed of 9 Mbps as per Gizmondo's tests and the full 10 GB limit). These kinds of data caps are just plain broken.

Since this is a Verizon network device I felt that their plans were much more relevant to the competition than anyone else's.
