Intel had really tied its hands and giving up most/all lowwer end to early mid level systems. Leaves a lot of room for AMD if they don't lock overclocking or gimp their lowwer end CPUs.

Not only that but only 8X+8X PCIe if running more than 1 video card on Intels new system. Of course I am sure their next socket will fix that and everybody will need new boards and cpus to get that fix. ;-)

For more PCI-E lanes you'd have to wait for socket 2011 pun intended in Q4, or go AMD RD890.

8x+8x is not a bottleneck with PCIe 2.1.

You only start to see an impact at 4x+4x
and even then only at very high resolutions like 5760 x 1200.
Even at 2560 x 1600 4x+4x makes almost no difference vs 16x+16x.

Your link shows that's true for GTX480 in SLI (up to 2560x1600) but the industry has kept chugging along as it always does since that article's August publish date.

Performance has improved with GTX580 and 6970. The small differences will be amplified. How much is the question.

Back in the real world of course, 8x+8x is quite fine for all but the highest end systems.

The point stands.

There is substantial bandwidth headroom in an 8x+8x, more than enough to accommodate any current SLI or Crossfire setup.

8x+8x is not a limitation.

I bet they're either trying to keep AMD alive (nobody wants to be an obvious monopoly) or making room for Atom or Atom-based chips for that market.
