Dell readies another dual-core gaming notebook

Dell just recently launched its XPS M1710 gaming notebook which features a 17" screen, an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS or 7900 GTX graphics chip and support for Intel's faster Core Duo processors. Dell is going one step further with the planned introduction of a gaming laptop with a much smaller form-factor.

The Dell XPS M1210, as its name implies, features a 12.1" widescreen (1280x800) display, a Core Duo processor and your choice of an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 or ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 graphics chip. Other niceties include an integrated dual-layer DVD burner, Bluetooth 2.0, Intel 802.11a/b/g wireless, Expresscard54 slot and an optional integrated webcam.

Dell employees divulged the information, including pictures, on internet forums over the past weekend.  Whether or not the leak was sanctioned as part of a viral campaign or just corporate insiders showing off has yet to be determined. According to Notebook Review, the laptop is due to be released within the next few weeks.

Dell acquired Alienware earlier this year, but both companies continue to release competing products.

Low End GPU

7300/X1300? Kinda low end for an XPS...

I guess its nice for a 12incher, though I wouldn't consider it a gaming notebook. Maybe just a little more performance than that of the other Intel GMA integrated GPUs.

I'd be awesome if they manage to stick a 7600 / X1600 into a 12/14 incher. I'd buy that instantly...though cooling would be an issue as well as power consumption

since it is just a 12" screen,
I don't think it would ever be considered a gaming notebook.

would you want to game on a 12" screen?
maybe solitaire or minesweeper.

For me it isn't the screen size as much as the resolution that matters.

Amen to that. My 14" T40p has 1400x1050 res and it is beautiful. I much prefer it to the 15" panel of the same res. Likewise I honestly think I prefer 17" LCD's @ 1280x1024 as compared to 19" ones at the same res.

Perhaps when my eye sight begins to fail me I'll reconsider that statement, but "big" pixels just piss me off for some reason :)

They had a low-end XPS 12" with integrated graphics so this is a big step-up. There are also plenty of laptops with X700 and 6600-class graphics, I'd imagine they will have 7600s and X1600s very shortly.

12" with discrete graphics is probably a first. Even if it is low-end who cares, it's still decent enough for such a small machine.

Asus has a 14 incher with an x1600 that should be avaliable this month.

if only it didn't have such a low resolution screen. losing 50% vertical resolution over the 14" screen i have now is unacceptable. it's hard enough to edit documents with 1050 pixels. if you've got word perfect's codes or footnotes displayed (or using that word plugin that shows codes) you won't be able to see even half a page.
