Amazon Kindle  (Source: Wired)
Kindle beat Harry Potter 7 as best selling item

Amazon is the company that helped to really kick the eReader market into high gear when it pulled the Kindle out and tossed it onto the market years ago. Since the Kindle debuted it has gone through several new versions all adding features and making the device even more popular. The Kindle is traditionally one of the most popular gadgets sold at Amazon.

Amazon issued  a statement this week that states in five months the new third gen Kindle has replaced the book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" as the best-selling product in the history of Amazon. It's hard to wrap you mind around the Kindle's sales pace. At its peak day, cited as November 29, Amazon sold 13.7 million units globally. That works out to 158 items sold per second.

"We're grateful to the millions of customers who have made the all-new Kindle the bestselling product in the history of Amazon -- surpassing Harry Potter 7," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO.

"We're seeing that many of the people who are buying Kindles also own an LCD tablet. Customers report using their LCD tablets for games, movies, and web browsing and their Kindles for reading sessions. They report preferring Kindle for reading because it weighs less, eliminates battery anxiety with its month-long battery life, and has the advanced paper-like Pearl e-ink display that reduces eyestrain, doesn't interfere with sleep patterns at bedtime, and works outside in direct sunlight, an important consideration especially for vacation reading. Kindle's $139 price point is a key factor -- it's low enough that people don't have to choose."

Amazon also offered up some cool facts about the Kindle from this Christmas. Amazon reports that on Christmas Day more people turned on new Kindles for the first time and downloaded more Kindle Buy once, Reade Everywhere apps than any other day in history. The best selling items on Amazon this Christmas were the WiFi Kindle and the Kindle 3G. the most purchased Kindle book was "The girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

I get my newspaper on my Kindle (the latest generation).

Since most newspapers don't run much color, you don't miss it. Instead, you save money, don't have dead tree editions piling up around your house, can clip and save articles to local memory, get no ink on your fingers, and can adjust the printing to a size you like.

I initially just bought a Kindle to have access to the many, many free classics available on Amazon and the Gutenberg project. The Kindle is a perfectly purpose-built gadget, and that purpose is comfortable reading. I've tried out the major competitors at Best Buy, where they have 'em all lined up together, and nothing else has the lightweight, easy-to-read, good battery life setup that the Kindle has. There really isn't another reader as good for just reading.
