We have price forecasts for AMD's single core offerings for the month of May

We’ve received a new price forecast for AMD’s single core Athlon 64 and Sempron 64 processors for the month of May. The new price forecast shows price drops among the lower-end and mid-range product ranges. These processors vary from the Sempron 64 2800+ all the way up to the Athlon 64 3500+. Price drops vary from 10-15% on Athlon 64 3200+ and 3500+ models while Sempron 64 receive a 19-25% drop on the upper end 3400+ and 3300+ models. Lower-end Sempron models receive rather modest price drops of around 10-14%.

There is no word on price forecasts on AMD’s dual core and higher end 4000+ single core processors. I have a theory for this, but it may not be correct.

AMD nor Intel sell "tray" processors anymore. If you buy a tray processor these days, its from the gray-market, which means someone sold you a processor that was allocated for a system build only. AMD has cracked down on this very hard over the last 6 months. I think their logic is that a system integrator can eat the 2-3 cost on the chip without much issue and further discourage the SI from selling the chip back into the retail channel.

Of course it is, they want to get the old stock off the market so people will be able to stock the new stuff. Its simple economics 101. Liquidate to make room for the newer processors. They do this with anything, video cards, hard drives, etc.

That's not true and these prices can't be right (box/oem). I (small computer firm) can buy and sell oem (tray) cpus without problems in computer wholesale company (the one which sells computer parts). These processors are available widely in our computer shop and are typically 10-15% cheaper than boxes.

Furthermore, I wanted to point out that the major movements to stop tray processors in the retail channel have been in North America. In Eastern Europe the supply chain is very different and still developing.

What did you expect? It's obviously a conspiracy. They're being paid, bribed by AMD to do this! There can be no other explanation!

Didn't they only cut their prices drastically only on their 90nm dual procs that were being phased out because they basically suck.

The Pentium D 9xx series is all 65nm, not 90nm. The 8xx series was 90nm.

The Pentium D 950 (3.4GHz, 65nm) is now just $316. Week before last, it was $637.

Since Socket 754 is now going to be supported through 2007 (I'm pretty sure I heard that) there will probably never be a S939 Sempron.

There out there in comps some of the big computer manufacture companies, I am not sure what ones. I do know that they made them for them so they wouldn't have to have more than one motherboard. I heard you can get find them in Eastern Europe????

The price cuts are quite nice. I'm particularly glad that Semprons will all be under 100 bucks, it seems to me that there was too much of an overlap between the low-end A64s and the Semprons. Another thing that's nice is the fact that the 2600+ seems to be about to be phased out so the cheapest Sempron will be a 256kB L2 part.

Of course we'll all like AMD to release an X2 3400+ part for ~200 but I think that in the next couple of months we'll see the X2 3800+ get remarkably close to this, especially if AMD's production allows it to continue its rapid growth and still leaves extra capacity for a greater dual-core push.
