The "Loch Ness Monster of consumer electronic devices" rears its head
Two new videos of the unannounced
Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone
, codenamed Zeus, have surfaced
A 15-second clip shows the Android 2.3-based device with a slide-out controller and touch-screen. A PlayStation app is selected, signifying a portal to a PlayStation-branded gaming experience. Tabs at the top of the app read "Recently Played" and "Recently Added".
In the longer clip, the device clearly shows that it is called "Zeus" and that it is running Android version "Gingerbread". The hardware bears the Sony Ericsson logo.
While the video clips look legit,
The Wall Street Journal
called their authenticity into question
, likening the PlayStation phone to "the Loch Ness Monster of consumer electronic devices."
does, however, believe that a Sony Ericsson smartphone with a slide-out videogame controller is, in fact, in development. "The phone is expected to run a version of Google Inc.’s Android operating system and the games will be downloaded through the device using an application on the phone,"
speculates of a possible unveiling at the Mobile World Congress in February -- an event that Sony Ericsson plans to make a lot of "noise" at.

This may very well be real

I'm starting to think there have been enough photos now of the phone that it might be real. However I seriously doubt this would be the only venture into mobile gaming from Sony.
My way of thinking is that if Sony was gonna launch a Playstation Phone it wouldn't allow Sony/Ericsson branding on the device as Ericsson has nothing to do with Playstation on any level.
I believe this is a way for Sony to branch out into a market they have previously not been present which is mobilephone games.
I'm guessing it'll be marketed as a Smartphone with "Playstation Capabilities" but I'm sure we'll see a more traditional and hopefully even more capable successor to the PSP in the form of PSP2 as well.
