The "Loch Ness Monster of consumer electronic devices" rears its head
Two new videos of the unannounced
Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone
, codenamed Zeus, have surfaced
A 15-second clip shows the Android 2.3-based device with a slide-out controller and touch-screen. A PlayStation app is selected, signifying a portal to a PlayStation-branded gaming experience. Tabs at the top of the app read "Recently Played" and "Recently Added".
In the longer clip, the device clearly shows that it is called "Zeus" and that it is running Android version "Gingerbread". The hardware bears the Sony Ericsson logo.
While the video clips look legit,
The Wall Street Journal
called their authenticity into question
, likening the PlayStation phone to "the Loch Ness Monster of consumer electronic devices."
does, however, believe that a Sony Ericsson smartphone with a slide-out videogame controller is, in fact, in development. "The phone is expected to run a version of Google Inc.’s Android operating system and the games will be downloaded through the device using an application on the phone,"
speculates of a possible unveiling at the Mobile World Congress in February -- an event that Sony Ericsson plans to make a lot of "noise" at.

This makes all the sense in the world...

With the capability of mobile chipsets these days, it seems to me to be absurd that there isn't something like this on the market already...essentially, a smartphone with accomodations to play proper video games - namely, a D-Pad and action buttons.
Whether or not it plays actual PS titles...well, whatever. That's not important to me.
I do think it would be important to incorporate the remainder of a proper keyboard onto the device...seems to be no reason you couldn't do that and have a usable D-Pad and action buttons.
Anyway, with just those couple extra bits there's no reason a device can't do everything a smartphone does, everything a media player does, and everything a PSP does.

What is the profit margin for handset makers? It's probably not that great, and (AKAIK) including a "D-Pad" on anything requires paying Nintendo royalties as they own the patent.
For consoles this isn't really an issue as the hardware makers have a huge and relatively steady stream of software sales. In the cell market, once the phone is sold, they're not making any money from software.

Royalty for a D-Pad? Don't think so...wads of devices from phones to .mp3 players to remote controls for stereo equipment have had D-pads for years.
Check out this photo of the original LG enV:
D-pad on the right side around the OK button. Put it on the left side, and add a couple action buttons. Done.
