WiMax up and running in L.A., Miami, D.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus, Ohio

Sprint has announced the expansion of its 4G WiMAX network to six new major metropolitan areas today. Sprint customers in Los Angeles; Miami; Washington, D.C.,; Cleveland; Cincinnati; and Columbus, Ohio, can now all take advantage of the high-speed network.

With the addition of the six new cities, Sprint's 4G network is now available in 68 markets across the United States, with San Francisco expected to join the fold on December 28.

We have witnessed a great demand from our customers for 4G speeds, power and capabilities in these cities already and today they officially have it,” Matt Carter, president-Sprint 4G, said in a press release. “We are proud to deliver on our commitment to serve our customers and deliver 4G to more major metropolitan areas in 2010.”

Sprint has been preparing for the major launches in L.A. and San Francisco for months. The company originally planned to cover 63 markets by year's end, but that number appears to have been expanded over the last month.

Sprint and Clearwire (which Sprint owns through majority-stock) are the only two companies in the U.S. that have employed WiMAX as their 4G wireless technology. While Clearwire has begun testing Long Term Evolution (LTE), Sprint has openly admitted that its spotty 4G coverage has cost it customers. And Sprint has not ruled out employing LTE -- like VerizonAT&T, and T-Mobileplan to -- in the future.
