Acer's stunner to be launched in April '11

Acer isn't exactly a name that quickly comes to mind when think of smartphones, but the company is looking to change that rather quickly with a new Android-based device.

The unnamed smartphone sports a huge 4.8" display with a generous 1024x480 resolution (21:9 aspect ratio). If the large screen isn't enough to impress, the smartphone also features a full metal body with subtle engraved patterns.

When it comes to hardware specs, all the usual suspects are here including a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8MP rear camera (with LED flash), 2MP front-facing camera, HDMI-out, and an accelerometer/gyroscope.

Connectivity duties are handled bier HSDPA, 802.11n, and the emerging Bluetooth 3.0 standard.

Acer calls its latest device "100% Smartphone, 100% Tablet", and you'll be able to find out more details closer to its April 2011 launch according to Engadget.

Your comparing a basic phone to a smartphone. So there really is no comparison. My Evo is only slightly taller than my wallet, less thick and skinnier. Now the Dell 7 inch thing is to big but I think the ACER phone is a good size.

I use my smartphone as a phone about 1 percent of the time. I uset he Pandora and GPS when I am in the car, I play Angry birds when I am waiting somewhere, I used the compass to set my OTA antenna.... These are swiss army knives not phones.

As someone who owns a MP3 player with a 4.8" screen I can say I would not want to carry this with me all the time as a phone. I wish there was more going on with good phones in smaller (~3-3.5" screen) sizes, but not happening at the moment.

Please note that this is a 21:9 device, not 16:9 like your EVO or 4:3 like the iPhone.

Just doing some simple math in my head, it has around the same total area as a 4.3" 16:9 device such as your EVO.. The end result is it may be a bit taller, but not any wider.. (And depending on how flush the screen is to the top or bottom, from the looks of it, there is not much space atop and under the screen)

That being said, a 4.8" device for a 16:9 or 4:3 display is just too big for a phone, i don't care who you are.

That is a very valid point you made. I was somewhat considering the dimensions when I read your post. Dailytech should seriously post something like this in future articles. Or, at least, "the phone is around the same width as the Evo, and about 3/4 of an in taller." (just guessing)
