Verizon Commercial Promises LTE in December

Let the 4G ad wars begin!
On the heels of
T-Mobile's mocking ad of AT&T
, which brags about "America's largest 4G network," Verizon has also begun broadcasting commercials that boast 4G.
, Verizon aired a dramatic 30-second spot during Sunday Night Football last night in which a man gets a package that contains a lightning bolt. A voice-over proclaims, "lightning fast, lightning strong -- Verizon 4G LTE. Rule the air on the most advanced 4G network in the world." The words "Coming December 2010" then appear under the Verizon logo.
This is, undoubtedly, just the first of a forthcoming media blitz from Verizon that will boast about its 4G network. Verizon began
testing its LTE network
in five cities back in June. The nation's largest wireless carrier
an ambitious roll-out plan that would bring LTE to 30 "NFL" cities by year's end (perhaps explaining the placement of the new spot). Slowly, news of
an LTE-branded LG device
an LTE equivalent of the EVO 4G
began making the rounds. This time, nobody can
question the "4G" tag
, because LTE is widely accepted as a true fourth-generation wireless technology.
Meanwhile, the DROID 2 Global has quietly replaced the DROID 2 on Verizon's website. It's running $199 after $100 mail-in-rebate (with a qualifying two-year contract).

4G or 3.9G

At the proposed speeds, early LTE will be incredible. 100Mbps capable, that's way the hell faster than any 3G network. I can live with them calling LTE 4G. LTE Advanced is 1Gbps that's insane and will be backward compatible with standard LTE as well. Big woop, way faster than 3G new radio ranges, same ranges as LTE Advanced. Let's just call it 4G and be done with it. They can call 1Gbps stuff 4G Extreme or some crap. If people where this pissy about 802.11n it would be called 802.11(half)n if it didn't have both 2.4G and 5G radios. Or perhaps 802.11g.9 lol...

Just because LTE can go that fast does not mean that will be the speed Verizon sets their service to provide. In the same way that most landline service does not run at maximum speed(due to limited backbone bandwidth), cellular service will also be limited in how fast the cellular connection will push data.
I agree about the whole idea that LTE really is a fourth generation technology. If there will be faster or slower implementations of LTE, then so be it.
