Android tablets will eat away at iPad dominance

The iPad is dominating the tablet market right now. Much of that market domination is thanks to the fact that there are few tablets on the market for consumers to choose from. The number of tablet options for users will change drastically moving into 2011 when a tablet-specific version of Android hits the market.

Research firm IMS Research forecasts Android tablets will start to eat away at the share of the market held by the iPad. The research firm says Android will eat away at the iPad's market much as Android smartphones have battered the iPhone.

According to IMS Research, Google tablets will hold 15% of the global tablet market in 2011. The research firm believes that by this time next year, the iPad could still hold as much as 75% of the tablet market or more. However, by 2015 Android tablets are predicted to have 28% of the market with as many as 15 different hardware brands fielding Android tablets including industry heavyweights Samsung, Dell, and Motorola.

The company taking the biggest leap into the Android tablet market right now is Samsung. The company has already launched the Galaxy Tab and it expects to sell millions of units during the first months of availability with 4.19 million expected to sell in Q4 2010.

"The availability of Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet via mobile carriers such as AT&T in the US will quickly boost Google Android's presence in the tablet market," said IMS Research analyst Anna Hunt.

Wow, my post is full of fail today. I mean it's conservative to think that Android won't get more than 15%.

I can see this being reasonable. A large number of the people who might be interested in tablets have already purchased iPads. Android will do well in this space, but it might be a little soon to cut too much into Apple's market just yet.

I do think that 28% market share seems very low for 2015 though. By that point I would expect Android to have at least similar market share to Apple, if not more.

That assumes the tablet market has already been saturated. I've always maintained that Apple missed a huge opportunity by aligning their tablet with content providers (preventing printing, no usb port, no external media slot, can only install approved apps via the app store) and pricing it too high.

If Android tablet makers can produce a similar functional system the size of a clipboard with external connectivity, at a price point of about $250 or lower, businesses will buy it in droves. The number of iPads will probably be relegated to the ~10% share Apple holds in the notebook market.

I can't agree with that. Apple didn't align their tablet with content providers. We've been able to print from almost the beginning. We've got a way to use SD cards (for input so far) and plug cameras in, and the price is low, not high.

It's interesting that you don't seem to think the 7" Samsung tablet pricing is high, as it's the same as Apple's much bigger device. I'd say that Apple got it right, and Samsung got it too high. Then we have the Hp Win 7 tablet with an 8.9" screen that's $799. That's much too high.

We'll have to see what comes out of these manufacturers with high quality 10" s-ips screens and such, including 10 hour battery life. Apple will be upgrading their tablet early next year, supposedly with two cameras, and a dual core Cortex 9, and I would imagine, that Apple will keep the same pricing.

The reason why these other manufacturers are going to 7" sizes is cost. They can't make a 10" tablet as cheaply as Apple can. Don't forget that estimates for pricing on Apple's iPad was running at a minimum of $800, with Paul thurrott at the January introduction stating that it would be at least $999 right after Jobs stated the specs. Then he said that it was priced low when that was announced. But, as so many are doing now, he says that its priced too high, though there's no comparable tablet to compare it to, and all of the small cheap ones are junky.

There's no way Android tablet manufacturers can make an equal quality tablet for less than Apple's making it. If they do, it's because they cut corners.
