LG Optimus One Sells 1 Million Units
November 17, 2010 9:01 AM
Expected to eventually sell 10 million units
that worldwide sales of its Android-based Optimus One line of smartphones have surpassed 1 million units within 40 days of its launch.
The device, available in the U.S. as the
Optimus S on Sprint
and the Optimus T on T-Mobile, runs Android 2.2 "Froyo" but is priced quite aggressively for an Android-based smartphone. For example, the Optimus T retails at $239.99 without a contract. (It is currently
being offered for free
with a two-year contract for a limited time on T-Mobile's website.) The Optimus S will regularly run you $49.99 after $50 mail-in-rebate on a two-year contract with Sprint.
The device sports a 3.2" touchscreen and 3.2-megapixel camera. It is one of the most affordable Froyo-running smartphones available.
"The versatile, powerful LG Optimus One was designed to provide an easy transition into the world of smartphones and as these numbers demonstrate, there is obviously a strong demand for this type of device,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Mobile. “Optimus One seems to be what many customers were waiting for, proving that smartphones aren’t just for early adopters anymore."
The Optimus One is still in the stages of a global rollout. Verizon
officially unveiled its variant
, the Vortex, on Monday. It will be available tomorrow and will run you $79.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate (with a qualifying two-year contract).
The Optimus One is already LG's fastest-selling smartphone ever,
besting even Samsung's Galaxy S line
, which took an extra five days and the support of an additional carrier to top 1 million units. The success has led LG to expect it to be its first smartphone to sell 10 million units. It will likely get a major boost from the Verizon model and money-conscious shoppers this holiday season.
