TSC groundbreaking ceremony   (Source: Virgin Galactic)
Facility will be used to produce WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo for Virgin Galactic

Budget cuts have seen replacements for the retiring space shuttle be cancelled and hopes of NASA returning to the moon dashed. While government sponsored space flight is on the ropes, space flight in the private sector is blasting off.

The Spaceship Company (TSC) has broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in the desert at the Mojave Air & Space Port. The groundbreaking is the official start of construction on the new 68,000 square foot clear-span hanger that will serve as offices, assembly, and testing facilities for TSC moving forward. The facility is large enough to allow the production of two WhiteKnightTwo and at least two smaller SpaceShipTwo craft at one time.

The WhiteKnightTwo is the mother craft that will carry SpaceShipTwo under its wings into the sky and then release the SpaceShipTwo to take its flight to sub-orbital altitude some 60 miles above the surface of the Earth. At that altitude, the passengers will be able to see the curve of the Earth and will be weightless. SpaceShipTwo will then fly like a conventional aircraft back to the Mojave Air & Space Port for landing.

George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic and TSC said, “Today’s groundbreaking of TSC’s new hangar is another significant milestone in developing Virgin Galactic’s commercial spaceflight operations – following on from recent achievements including the maiden and second glide flights of SpaceShipTwo and the dedication of Spaceport America’s runway in New Mexico.”

PC World reports that the facility will employ 170 people when production is in full swing and that the company is already looking for engineers and workers for the facility. The new building is expected to be completed by September 2011. The facility is building the aircraft for Virgin Galactic.

WhiteKnightTwo was unveiled in July of 2008, and the first flight for SpaceShipTwo was in October 2010.
