1 GB of data for $30 per month

Sprint is taking a step into Apple territory with the impending launch of the ZTE Peel, a case for the iPod Touch that allows the device to connect to the mobile carrier's 3G data services.

BoyGeniusReport received a screenshot from a tipster that confirms the new accessory. Here's what we can decipher: The Peel will launch on November 14, and will run $79.99 (no contract required). Monthly service from Sprint runs $29.99 (again, no contract required) and includes 1 GB of data, with overages running 5 cents per megabyte.

The Peel case supports second- and third-generation iPod Touches; it can support up to two devices via WiFi. It will not work properly in Sprint's roaming coverage.

BGR is speculating the possibility of the Peel being delayed, considering it doesn't support the fourth-generation iPod Touch. Time will tell.

RE: $80 device just to pay $30/month for 1GB?

What you're missing is the mandatory $70 a month for voice + txting from AT&T bringing the total monthly costs to $100 for a smartphone. Only Sprint's data plan offers unlimited voice, txt and data for less ($70). But for people who only want the data plan this is a great deal.

I've never used sprint or AT&T so I don't know much about their pricing but it's safe to say that everyone including itouch owners likely already have a voice plan and a separate cellphone that they use alongside the itouch. In this case, they are already paying whatever monthly fee it is for voice.

I'm thinking, they could just upgrade to a smartphone(instead of paying $80 for this device) and(for Verizon at least) add a $30/month data plan which for all intent and purposes is currently unlimited rather than 1GB.

Texting is still optional last I checked.

But honestly, I don't know much about this stuff, just doesn't seem worth it IMO.

The iPad 3G plan is $25/mo for 2GB of data - so this isn't really a good deal yet.
