Toyota RAV4 EV will debut in prototype form in LA next month  (Source: Toyota)
Tesla will make EV gear for the RAV4 EV set for 2010

Toyota was one of the pioneers of hybrid vehicle technology around the world and the company's technology was so good that it was licensed to other carmakers for use in their hybrids. While Toyota sells boatloads of Prius' around the world, other makers are hard at work on battery and EV tech that is making its way to the public.

Toyota made an announcement in May of this year that it be investing $50M into Tesla Motors and that the two would work together to produce electric vehicles at the NUMMI plant. The first fruits of that joint venture have been announced with
Autoblog Green reporting that Toyota and Tesla had inked a $60M deal that will see Tesla provide the components needed for the RAV4 electric vehicle.

The deal surfaced in a Toyota regulatory filing this month that showed Tesla will be developing the battery, power electronics module, electric motor, gearbox, and software for the Toyota RAV4 EV. The first prototype of the electric RAV4 will be seen at the LA Auto show and the vehicle isn’t expected to be commercially available until 2012. Hard specs on the RAV4 EV and the electric drive components being developed for the car are not available at this time

It is interesting... The only real issue I'm aware of them having has been the stuck accelerator (floor mat), which is very different than a car that accelerates on its own

Furthermore, it was posted in this very site how an independent study done by the US shows that nearly every single one of the cases of "unexpected acceleration" turned out to be driver error (with a few cases due to issues OTHER than the control electronics).

Of course, this isn't sensationalized, remembered, or EVEN NOTED.

Basically Toyota got their image stained through no fault of their own. You can't own to a defect when it really doesn't exist.

Being that it was a joke, it should be noted that what you say is correct. However, Toyota became a target of Media attacks simply because of the poor performance of the American Auto Industry in a time of financial ruin. this obviously helped American Auto's increase their sales. With that said, I don't think they need to be sued up the ying-yang like they currently are.

Interesting perspective, but we'll have to leave this at conjecture rather than fact.

Toyota is still highly regarded in terms of quality, further, those who gravitate to foreign brands usually don't consider American brands whatsoever- there are enough high quality foreign (and more specifically Japanese) makes to flock to if one becomes problematic.

And there have been enough "media attacks" criticizing American car makers for focusing on flashy large vehicles as opposed to reliability and smaller vehicles.

The media likes to sensationalize, period, whether it's American or Foreign makes of vehicles. Almost every automaker has gotten theirs from bad press, and now it's Toyota's turn. This has nothing to do with the American media trying to help out American automakers.

It is not the "media attacks" that bothered me, after all the media is the media. They do what they do and we all by now realize that if a news story can be sensationalized to last longer they will do it.

What bothered me was several radio spots ran by GM last year during Toyota's troubles. One of the spots featured someone who has supposedly just dropped Toyota for a new GM car. In a 30 second spot the word "Safety" was used no less than 8 times. I personally look upon this type of "piling on " by GM as akin to the type you see during a political campaign, sleazy and low.

I have a Camry, and like it, but in the last 2 months or so, it will inexplicably rev up the RPMs from 1 to 2 thousand, when I'm stopped, like at a stoplight. Only happens rarely, but it scared ths shit out of me the first time it happened. Strangely enough it doesn't seem to happen while actually moving though.

I haven't heard alot about the acceleration issue, but the accelerator getting stuck got alot of attention. Toyota was great in dealing with these issues - replaced the car mat (sticking issue), and put something on the accelerator for free.

Well, I so happen to be "one of these cases" though it was unreported because I managed to get the car under control before crashing. Turns out the problem was with the floormat which wasn't anchored using the floor anchors like it was suppose to be. Never would have happened otherwise.. But before I figured that out while trying to control the vehicle (and not wanting to shift into neutral in order to not damage the engine), it was pretty frightening..

You made a decision not to shift into neutral?! To save the engine?! Remind me not to drive where you live. Smash the car, kill other people (your own passengers and other cars and pedestrians), sure, that's okay. But not damage the engine?! Unbelievable.

When the throttle got stuck on my 1970 Plymouth Sport Suburban station wagon in the late 70's (due to a bad throttle cable - that's why they used to stick in the old days) that had a 383 max wedge engine with a torque flite tranny - so was wickedly fast - even at 18 I knew to put it in neutral and to heck with the engine. I still can't believe your post.

The rev limiter would have taken care of that. Shoot, nowadays some cars have their rev limiter kick in at around 2000 RPM when the transmission is in neutral.

So much for neutral drops :-(

I remember when that report was released and asking myself, "WTF? How dumb are people that they can't stop the car?!"

The one guy in California even went as far to claim that the car prevented him from moving the shifter into Neutral and then using the pedal or emergency brake to stop. I knew as soon as I heard that the majority of the "auto acceleration" issues had to PEBCAK.

Every car that I have ever driven allows you to move the shifter from Drive to Neutral without hitting the brake pedal; claims otherwise are from someone who just doesn't know how to operate their own car, as was the case with most of the issues with Toyota.

If it was only the faulty floormats, why did they also modify/repair a crapton of accelerator pedal assemblies? Placebo?
