Dell will be releasing a 7-inch Streak tablet/mobile-internet device shortly, according to the company's top Chinese executive.  (Source: Dell)
New 7-inch model will keep the Streak brand name

The 5-inch Dell Streak is currently available in the U.S., the UK and select other countries.  While that mobile-internet device offers a bit of the capabilities of the iPad in a smaller package, many are awaiting larger tablet alternatives to the iPad, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

To those ends, Dell Greater China President Amit Midha reports that the company will be launching a 7-inch tablet, also bearing the Streak brand name, in just a few weeks.  He is quoted by The Wall Street Journal as remarking, "It was showed off at Oracle World by Michael [Dell] last week and we'll be launching very, very soon—within the next few weeks."

Dell's announcement comes hot on the heels of Research in Motion's unveiling of its 7-inch "PlayBook" tablet.

Mr. Midha also said that a 10-inch tablet -- a direct competitor to the 9.7-inch iPad -- will be coming in 6-12 months.  That long delay certainly gives Apple plenty of time to rake in cash from its unchallenged market position.  It's somewhat astounding that a direct 10-inch competitor to the iPad won't arrive until almost a year after Apple's launch, especially considering the iPad is currently selling 2.3+ million units a month.

The 7-inch tablet, according to Mr. Midha will run Android OS.  Considering its impending launch, it will likely be powered by Android 2.2 "Froyo" -- just like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.  Mr. Midha said that some future Dell tablets would be powered by Windows operating systems -- presumably the 10-inch model included.  No plans for tablets powered by Google's new Chrome OS were discussed.

Dell is expanding its roll-out of th 5-inch streak to Australia.  The device will go on sale Friday, priced at $649 AD($628 USD) with new contract from Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. subsidiary Optus.  The handheld will air in China later this year.  China Mobile Ltd. will provide wireless service for the device and for Dell's upcoming Android/Windows Mobile 7 smart phones.

In other news, Mr. Midha says that China in two years -- by 2012 -- will pass the U.S. as the world's largest computer market.  He says that the Chinese market is expected to grow 18 to 20 percent this year alone.  He also said that Dell expects to see its revenue top $60B USD, globally.  Dell has recently posted impressive growth as competitors have struggled.

The 5" just came out, and it's already obsolete? All because it's inferior to the competition and there's a better version coming? Kinda reminds me of the Zune...

How is it obsolete?

Having used the Streak, I have to say that I find it superior in many ways to my iPhone 4 and most other Android devices and the screen is really something else.

The phone looks amazing and pictures do not do it justice. And it is just about pocket-able in jeans. There is also an official 2.1, Eclair, OS install courtesy of O2 (primarily for European users)

The market for the 5" Streak is not going to go away. The 7" and 10" versions appears to be geared towards a different user. That being said, I think Dell has done a poor job in advertising the products the right way, and the lack of Froyo right now is glaring.

This "phone" (thank you for calling it as it is: A PHONE!) was obsolete before it was even launched. Android 1.6? Nice! 5" is too big to be a phone as noted with your "just about pocket-able" statement and way too small to be a "tablet" - It's in no-mans-land. It was rushed to market so Dell could claim to be #2 behind Apple. Dell is #2 alright. A big stinkin' pile of #2 to be exact.

A lot of companies are pinning their hopes on the 7" size tablet. I think the manufacturing price point is attractive but I have my doubts about that size being too small though. It might be the ideal size for portable gaming. Like an iPod touch gaming replacement. I'd have to see one in person.

As far as claiming your 1.6 Streak being superior to an iPhone 4 or current 2.2 Android models... yea... I'm not buying it.

More like the Dell Jukebox. An even bigger failure than the Zune!

I'd like to welcome Dell to the club. Seems like they went about joining it all wrong though.

Can the screen be read comfortably in direct sunlight?

No? Too bad. Not interested.

isn't a pad more of a leisure device? can't we wait to find some shade before we pull the pad out?

In my opinion the Streak isn't a horrible product but its put on the market horribly.

Lack of real OS support, (stuck on 1.6) No good mod community for custom roms.

Stuck on an At&T contract? wtf is wrong with tablet manu's releasing consumer devices through cell phone carriers. Sell your devices unlocked and any antenna. That is all.

Considering the 5" Streak runs Android 1.6 (Can you say "outdated"?) Why would anyone assume the 7" big brother will debut with version 2.2? My biggest issue with the 5" Streak is that it's even called a tablet! Dell was so antsy to be #2 into the tablet market, they made an oversized cell phone and branded it as a "tablet" - Give me a break! The Streak is too big to be a usable phone and too small to be a usable tablet. It's destined for failure. I'd love to see some sales figures to back me up. Lastly, both Dell and Samsung are making huge mistakes treating these like cell phones. Who wants a second phone bill for their tablet computer? Who loves the idea of yet another two year contract? Thanks, but no thanks.
