Googling is down in the U.S., it seems

Americans prefer socializing on Facebook to searching for information on Google or looking up videos on YouTube. For the first time since its inception, Facebook beat out Google for a full week as the most visited site in the U.S.  That is the word from online tracking firm comScore.

Data from the research company indicates that during the month of August, Americans spent 41.1 million minutes on Facebook while spending just 39.8 million minutes on all Google sites combined.

Nearly 10 percent of internet users across the U.S. use Facebook versus 9.6 percent for internet giant Google. Facebook has only one domain while the Google umbrella includes Google News, YouTube, Gmail and other sites, according to the
New York Post and International Business Times.

"Internet users are spending more time posting photographs, updating status messages and scrolling through news from friends which is rivaling everything else people do online," said comScore.

This increase is significant as Google led by 12 percent just last year.  Internet users spent five percent of their time on the social networking site in August 2009 and less than two percent on Facebook in 2007 according to comScore.

This has the be saddest thing I've read about in a while. Excuse me while I lose faith in humanity more.

For me it was this. It's not a real study, but I'll be damned if it doesn't match most of the Facebook users I know to a T.

Yeh, that's pretty pathetic as well amanojaku.

Though, without hard scientific data, it's hard to take that at 100% face value; even so, it's still sad.

Here's a tip: Instead of playing Mafia Wars for 3 hours a day, why don't you put your time to better use and browse Wikipedia...? You might actually...gasp... learn something. I know Wikipedia isn't perfect and always 100% correct, but good lord... your friends don't need to know that you just exhaled and are about to inhale again, or that your boyfriend/girlfriend said something you thought was mean but because you love her/him so much, you just let it go but secretly you really didn't but you think you can but you really think you can't but you know you should (I could go on...)

Facebook does increase productivity. Only not the kind of productivity you'd imagine.

It increases the effectiveness in which we can waste time. If we feel like wasting time, we can do it in an instant, if we feel like wasting more time we can go look what others are doing to spend their time. If we want to stop wasting time, we can do so immediantly by hitting the little X.

My proof of this? Your post. Just what exactly has it done to increase your productivity? Nothing. It has actually decreased my productivity because i found it interesting enough to reply to. Atleast if you'd played maffia wars your time spend would have yielded some sort of result. While what i write is based on nothing but my own logic. I need not think more for this post then i do for maffia wars because i'll think about stuff at the same speed anyway, even while staring out of a window (which i cannot do for more then 5 minutes because of the above).

Your friends do not need to know what your doing, no. But they want to know. Why do they want to know? Because they do not want to do whatever they where doing and the option is there to look what their friends are doing.

Just to prove my point further, i've spend about an hour and a half typing and retyping the below comment. I'm not completely satisfied with it. But i decided i've wasted enough time on this.

I've wasted far too much time on Wikipedia before Facebook. Now I waste far too much time on Facebook. Of course I've wasted a lot of time reading DailyTech comments at work.

The Question is now:
When will Facebook be on NYSE?

Well yeah, but by that logic we could stop playing video games and MMO's and put our time to better use as well. But pffft, who wants to do that!? :)

About Facebook, I think some of you are confusing it with Twitter. It's really not THAT bad. It's a great way to keep in touch with people all over the place, even family members, and sure some of the free flash games are fun too. But not everyone uses it like Twitter, at least nobody I know.

Is everyone really this judgmental or is Facebook the new thing that's popular to bash?

I'm sure that the majority of facebook users are wasting their time. But as much time that can be wasted on facebook or typing this, it does provide value as well.

For instance, one of facebook's purpose is to reconnect people. My mother found her long lost brother, whom she was separated from at birth. Sure there are other alternatives to finding people, but look at how easy it was for her! And it was all free on top of that! Like anything else in this world, use it in moderation and your time 'wasted' will balance itself out.

The day my anti-social network mother got a Facebook account marked the beginning of the apocalypse for me.
