The king is back! "Duke Nukem Forever" has been revived, and is nearing release in a shocking turn of events.  (Source: Kotaku)

The demo features a quick taste of the game's combat gameplay, in which the macho-protagonist, Duke Nukem, fights to save his babes from hoards of evil extraterrestrials.  (Source: Kotaku)

The game features plenty of sexual innuendo just like its predecessors -- the demo concludes with Nukem appearing to be receiving oral pleasure from a pair of females.  (Source: Ripten)
"It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum... and I'm all outta gum."

"Hail to the king baby!", Duke Nukem is back.  Some may take Friday's announcement of Duke Nukem Forever's resurrection as a sign of the end of times, but it's hard not to feel a bit of excitement that maybe, just maybe, this bad joke could transform into a modern first-person shooter gem.

For today's younger generation of gamers, Duke Nukem may not ring many more bells than Q*bert, but there was a time when the brash talking, hyper-masculine, buzz-cut womanizer Duke headlined one of the best selling first person shooters of its decade (Duke Nukem 3D).

By the year 2009, those who still remembered the games used them more frequently in punchlines than in praise.  After all, Duke Nukem 3D's sequel, the ironically named Duke Nukem Forever, had seen an extraordinarily bizarre development lifecycle with developer 3D Realms still without a finished title after 12 years of development, dating back to 1997.  Then in mid-2009 Take-Two Interactive, who had purchased publishing rights, sued cash-strapped 3D Realms, just as the company was reportedly finishing up the long awaited title.

The ensuing legal battle was settled with undisclosed terms in May of this year.

3D Realms retained the rights to the game.  And in perhaps the wisest decision it had made concerning the seemingly cursed title, it decided to hand over the development reins to Randy Pitchford's studio Gearbox Software.

Mr. Pitchford was no Nukem newbie.  He had been hired in the 1990s to help development Duke Nukem 3D.  And while he left 3D Realms just as Duke Nukem Forever was kicking into full swing, Mr. Pitchford always kept a soft spot for the machismo-machine that made him a software superstar.

On Friday at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Mr. Pitchford let the cat out of the bag showing off a 15-minute live gameplay demo [video here] filled with sexual innuendo, violence, and suitably attractive graphics.  And according to Mr. Pitchford the game is nearly finished, and will launch complete with multiplayer.  He states in a recent interview, "It's a large, large game."

If you think Mr. Pitchford might be tempted to tone the game down for today's more sensitive audience, think again.  It looks to be headed for a solid "M" -- if it catches the ESRB folks on a generous day.

Mr. Pitchford describes the protagonist, remarking, "In Duke's world this is all real shit. These fucking aliens are here and they're fucking our planet up and they're taking our chicks. There's a reason for that, and Duke is the only guy who can stop them. In his universe, that all makes perfect sense. As a result, he is the most important person in his universe. And he knows it. He enjoys it. He franchises it! He's got Duke Burgers opened up all over the country. It's a weird universe, but it works for him. He's the king!"

But the "king" has his work cut out for him if he hopes to win back gamers.  After all if there's one thing more deadly than a pack of babe-stealing aliens, it's the risk of remaining a punchline from one more delay.

Despite the risk, Mr. Pitchford is the picture of confidence and exuberance.  He says he can understand if some are skeptical, but promises not to disappoint.  He states, "I think everybody feels the way I felt when Duke was in trouble in 2009.  Yeah, we've been jerked around. But we kind of want him to be triumphant. In Duke's time of need, we almost want to support him. And I'm feeling that kind of love."

As for Nukem, he appears to be feeling the love, too.

The demo concludes with the camera panning out to show that the whole intro experience was just a console game being played by the real Duke Nukem.  And Duke has company -- a pair of females, who appear to have been giving old Nukem some oral pleasure.  One of them takes a breather and looks up at him to ask, "So how was the game Duke, was it any good?"

He gruffly remarks, "Yeah, but after 12 fucking years . . . it better be."

gone is my incessant need to keep upgrading my PC every other month. I was spending fortunes of cash and precious time on it.
That's because you're a dumb noob. I upgrade my PC every other YEAR, not MONTH, and then I only upgrade video, and the price of video upgrade is always about 300 bucks or so. Upgrading everything else is MUCH less often. So all in all I pay about 20 bucks a month on average to keep my PC on top of current games. If you can't afford that - you should stop spewing obvious BS about consoles being "cheaper". Whatever you "save" on those 20 bucks a month for maintaining a PC is compensated by buying much more expensive games (compared to Steam low priced awesomeness), buying expensive overpriced molasses slow crap hardware like PS3 or buying replacement 360s for your another RROD, buying uberexpensive insanely overpriced HDDs for 360 and dealing with crappy low res graphics for all that money you wasted. Fuck it man. This ugly shit is for noobs like yourself. I can live without top notch console exclusives like The Darkness, Halo, Uncharted or GeoW. When and IF console exclusives are gonna flood us and PC gaming starts looking MUCH smaller and crappier than all these nice sweet exclusives - THEN maybe I will be able to put up with all that console shit for losers and lying noobs. But we are not there yet.

If you gonna advertise console gaming - please use proper arguments, nothing works stronger than a list of console exclusive heavy weights such as GeoW or Halo. This we have nothing to counter with on a PC side, this is where we PC gamers lose forever.

But to use that moronic arguments that PCs lose because they are more expensive? This is like saying that trucks lose because they are more expensive than bikes. Not even funny.

OMG, get a life. You put way too much of your self worth in your electronics. I was talking about me, and my own obsession with upgrading, I had a problem, most people do not. I wasnt anywhere making a blanket statement about everyone and I was not advertising for consoles. WTF, you are the second person today that takes all kinds of offense because I said console gaming is where most all of the money, developers and such are concentrating. It's not personal man, its OK, your gonna be fine. Its not like I insulted your precious Mac platform FFS!

1. gasp! Did YOU just say that? lol
2. Thanks... I am really just looking on the bright side. Console taking over the bulk of the gaming world had a few good points for me, and I was just stating them, and telling the original post that I responded to to get used to it, because consoles are where its at, like it or not.
3. Only to a fanboy would this be insulting. In a non literal sense, it will be nailing the coffin. not that PC game sales will be dead, but the vast disparity in game sales and developers focus will grow even more when Kinect and Natal are out.

When Natal and Kinect come out, + add a year or two for the bulk of the talented game developers out there to release a 2nd gen of games designed for it, its going to rock.

Imagine playing a boxing game where to throw and uppercut, you literally have to throw and uppercut and dodging means really dodging. Light saber battles with a handheld wand of sorts that matches your every move, etc etc. You could even potentially have a 3 stooges game where you get poked in the eyes, and the 2nd poke deflect it by placing your flat hand on the bridge of your nose perpendicular to your face to block the 2 finger eye poke. OK, that sounds rediculous, but you get my point, there is no limit to gaming with controllers like that.

Kinect is Natal. I assume you mean Kinect and Move since Move is for the PS3. Kinect/Natal and Move aren't going to have much of an impact. They are just addons, expensive ones at that. There'll probably be a few games with maybe 1-2 that have any type of splash in the market. We all know that if it doesn't come standard it's going to be a very niche product.

I am not talking at release date, I am talking a few years down the road when the potential is reached and developers are making really great games with it. It will change the face of gaming forever. Maybe not the first release, but a future improved and cheaper version... Maybe even next gen consoles. Have you seen what it can do?

Try not to think of the cheesy games it will be released with, but years down the road. There are literally no limits to the games that can be made from it.

Niche market? Years from now we will be talking about how it changed gaming forever.

HAHAHAHAHA.... my daily laugh has been filled again.

I was talking about it's whole lifetime, not at release. Name one addon EVER that wasn't a niche product? Closest thing I can think of is Sega CD.... and you see how well that worked.

Kinect could be the addon that breaks the mold, but I think you're diluting yourself if that's something you are expecting. Move is too similar to the WiiMote to have any type of impact. If they use Kinect as a primary type controller for the next xBox..... THEN it could end up being game changing. The way it is now.... highly highly highly highly unlikely.

Glad I could help brighten your day LOL ;) ...

I am not talking about it as an add on, I am talking about the tech. Full motion sensors are going to change gaming. And yes, you can gaurantee the next Xbox and Playstation will both have it. Its going to be huge.

I got a chance to see it working in person at the Microsoft store here in Scottsdale AZ. The lines of absolutely awe struck people waiting to get a turn tell all. Believe me, its going to be big and will change gaming.
