The king is back! "Duke Nukem Forever" has been revived, and is nearing release in a shocking turn of events.  (Source: Kotaku)

The demo features a quick taste of the game's combat gameplay, in which the macho-protagonist, Duke Nukem, fights to save his babes from hoards of evil extraterrestrials.  (Source: Kotaku)

The game features plenty of sexual innuendo just like its predecessors -- the demo concludes with Nukem appearing to be receiving oral pleasure from a pair of females.  (Source: Ripten)
"It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum... and I'm all outta gum."

"Hail to the king baby!", Duke Nukem is back.  Some may take Friday's announcement of Duke Nukem Forever's resurrection as a sign of the end of times, but it's hard not to feel a bit of excitement that maybe, just maybe, this bad joke could transform into a modern first-person shooter gem.

For today's younger generation of gamers, Duke Nukem may not ring many more bells than Q*bert, but there was a time when the brash talking, hyper-masculine, buzz-cut womanizer Duke headlined one of the best selling first person shooters of its decade (Duke Nukem 3D).

By the year 2009, those who still remembered the games used them more frequently in punchlines than in praise.  After all, Duke Nukem 3D's sequel, the ironically named Duke Nukem Forever, had seen an extraordinarily bizarre development lifecycle with developer 3D Realms still without a finished title after 12 years of development, dating back to 1997.  Then in mid-2009 Take-Two Interactive, who had purchased publishing rights, sued cash-strapped 3D Realms, just as the company was reportedly finishing up the long awaited title.

The ensuing legal battle was settled with undisclosed terms in May of this year.

3D Realms retained the rights to the game.  And in perhaps the wisest decision it had made concerning the seemingly cursed title, it decided to hand over the development reins to Randy Pitchford's studio Gearbox Software.

Mr. Pitchford was no Nukem newbie.  He had been hired in the 1990s to help development Duke Nukem 3D.  And while he left 3D Realms just as Duke Nukem Forever was kicking into full swing, Mr. Pitchford always kept a soft spot for the machismo-machine that made him a software superstar.

On Friday at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Mr. Pitchford let the cat out of the bag showing off a 15-minute live gameplay demo [video here] filled with sexual innuendo, violence, and suitably attractive graphics.  And according to Mr. Pitchford the game is nearly finished, and will launch complete with multiplayer.  He states in a recent interview, "It's a large, large game."

If you think Mr. Pitchford might be tempted to tone the game down for today's more sensitive audience, think again.  It looks to be headed for a solid "M" -- if it catches the ESRB folks on a generous day.

Mr. Pitchford describes the protagonist, remarking, "In Duke's world this is all real shit. These fucking aliens are here and they're fucking our planet up and they're taking our chicks. There's a reason for that, and Duke is the only guy who can stop them. In his universe, that all makes perfect sense. As a result, he is the most important person in his universe. And he knows it. He enjoys it. He franchises it! He's got Duke Burgers opened up all over the country. It's a weird universe, but it works for him. He's the king!"

But the "king" has his work cut out for him if he hopes to win back gamers.  After all if there's one thing more deadly than a pack of babe-stealing aliens, it's the risk of remaining a punchline from one more delay.

Despite the risk, Mr. Pitchford is the picture of confidence and exuberance.  He says he can understand if some are skeptical, but promises not to disappoint.  He states, "I think everybody feels the way I felt when Duke was in trouble in 2009.  Yeah, we've been jerked around. But we kind of want him to be triumphant. In Duke's time of need, we almost want to support him. And I'm feeling that kind of love."

As for Nukem, he appears to be feeling the love, too.

The demo concludes with the camera panning out to show that the whole intro experience was just a console game being played by the real Duke Nukem.  And Duke has company -- a pair of females, who appear to have been giving old Nukem some oral pleasure.  One of them takes a breather and looks up at him to ask, "So how was the game Duke, was it any good?"

He gruffly remarks, "Yeah, but after 12 fucking years . . . it better be."

DNF is better off staying in development hades forever. Borderlands multiplayer was a nitemare. Forget about dedicated servers or any kind of support for the PC. DNF will be a console port.

Gearbox acquired a mostly complete game; a game designed from the ground up to be a PC game. I doubt they would shoot themselves in the foot and tear apart a perfectly good game. In fact, this might be a return to the good ole days where console tards get f*cked up controls and WE get a working game!

Also, Gearbox are the ones who made that wonderful Halo CE port that sh*t all over the Xbox version and was way more fun than Halo 2 on either the PC or Xbox.

Borderlands multiplayer was a nitemare.

And you base this statement on what, exactly?

The fact that getting a multiplayer game going on PC required the opening of ports on the router, the sacrifice of a virgin from California, and a 6 day fasting ritual to actually allow people to join a game that you started. Being able to join a game started by someone you didn't know required a pact with the devil.

Sometimes is sometimes isn't. It's basically only for hosting games though. If you don't host then you almost never have to worry about it. I've run across a couple games where that isn't true, namely Age of Empires 3. The multiplayer was poorly implemented.

First of all I'd like to point out that I've played Borderlands online a LOT. It is not as much of a hassle as you describe.

Secondly, this is a problem with the user's network configuration, not the game. I remember hearing about bugs when the game first launched, but they had been patched by the time I bought it (November of last year). Any problem that remains now is not limited to Borderlands. A user that has trouble hosting a Borderlands game will have trouble hosting other games too. Any time you're connecting to someone that isn't a dedicated and properly-configured server there is the potential for it to not work. Having to open ports is not a big deal and should be expected if you're connecting through a router. Anyone who's ever hosted any type of server (ftp, vnc, torrents, etc) knows this.

You could blame Gearbox for choosing a matchmaking service over dedicated servers, but honestly, matchmaking caters better to the type of game that it is. Who the hell hosts a dedicated server for 4P coop? Dedicated is better for games like UT, CSS, or TF2 where there are many players.

With all this aside, I think Gearbox should be applauded for the way they seamlessly integrated SP and MP. You can be playing SP, decide to invite some friends, do so without even having to exit the current game, and when your friends join everyone has all their equipment and the enemies and items all scale properly. It's pretty amazing how well it all works. This is why I asked for justification from the OP for their statement that Borderlands MP is a 'nitemare'.

True, but it's because of their whole "piracy" crusade. Not that consoles don't have their place, but FPS games sure aren't one of them. FPS games have turned to crap because of this console "craze." It's even starting to affect other games, namely RTSs.

PC game shouldn't be treated like console games. It just makes no sense. It's like SquareEnix making the next Final Fantasy game for the PS3, but it'll also run on the original PS.

You are absolutely right. It is because of piracy. PC games offer a way better total solution for games, mods, custom maps etc etc... Its sad that most developers have moved to consoles, but it is a fact.

Maybe you didn't follow console trends much lately. Mods, maps, DL content is widely available on consoles nowadays.

What is not available (at least on PS3 that I own) are cheats. And boy, does it make a difference! I have been playing Bad Company 2 on PS3 for the big part of last 5 months, and while I did come across good players, I never came across godly untouchable ones. No hacks, everyone plays on same hardware and controller... takes so much of frustration I had playing on PC.

I'm still keeping my PC in good gaming condition, but I did postpone upgrading my graphics (still 8800GT) as I hardly did any gaming on it this year, short of some local (closed-door) lan parties. I took PS3 because I was not sure if I will get console gaming virus or not (and it can always double as BR player), but my fears were not justified - it turns out I am more than willing to sacrifice some eye-candy for some clean, cheat-proof multiplayer.

By Alexstarfire on 9/5/2010 7:45:01 PM , Rating: 3
Yes, you pay for all that premium content as well. There might not have been hacks on the PS3 since it pretty much only recently got hacked. But now that it has I think we'll see more and more hacks.

I'd rather have all that content for free. Simple fact is console games have a shorter lifespan than most good PC games. Shouldn't have to be rich just to play video games.

i take it you never played many online games on a console then. resistance 1 and 2, killzone 2, bad company (the first, played the second on pc), socom, halo, gears, mag, etc, all have their share of hackers. whats more is that i see hackers MORE often over psn and xbox live then i do playing css and other games. this is due to the fact that AT LEAST PC GAMES ALLOW YOU TO KICK PEOPLE WHO ARE HACKING!

as for mods, sorry, but the ONLY console game to allow mods is ut3, all others with "custom content" are limited to available in game assets. oh, and i dont count $15 for 3 maps as a plus for the consoles either.

dont get me wrong, i have all three current gen consoles, but your post is so full of half-truths and outright lies its not funny.

It is not cheating so much as good player cannot get as good on a console. I play both and there is a world of skill difference between myself with a crappy small innacurate joystick and a precise mouse. There is also a big difference in how fast I can move through commands when I have 100 keys on a good keyboard available as opposed to unresponsive low quality controllers with an order of magnitude less keys.

A console just forces everyone to play like crap because they are given crap it is more like just handicapping good players so they cannot play to their full potential. Bad players are bad anyway so they hardly notice the difference other then they do not get fragged as fast.

Then again it is the way people move because it makes more noobs feel like they are better then they actually are.

"pc gaming is dying forever"

you put quotes on it, but you types it out yourself ??? Where exactly did I say anything like that? You are, as usual having an argument by yourself, arguing points that were only made in your own head.

All I am saying is that sales of console games are far FAR higher. Call of Duty Modern warefare 2 is a good example, as it came out on Xbox, PC, and PS3. The 2 consoles sole over 6 million the first month, while PC was 170,000.

You can think 7 million is alot, but there are 100's of millions of consoles out there. I dont think PC gaming is going away and never said anything of hte sort - just that Consoles are where the vast mojority of sales, developers, games and $$$ is at.

RE: Anyone but Gearbox!!!

Comparing individual games you're probably right, but PC has far more games than any single console could ever hope for in it's entire lifetime. Counting up total sales on an individual platform would be practically impossible.

Ohh, and there are billions of PCs in the world. Several times larger than all the current-gen consoles combined. Doubt more money is being made on consoles. For any single dev, they probably do make more, but as a whole it's just asinine to think that a smaller market can make more than a much bigger one. It's easy to see that most of the newer games are geared towards consoles though.

How many of those PCs are capable of running modern games, and how many of those capable are actually being used to run games..?

And then, there is another thing: while high-end gaming rigs do offer superior visual experience to consoles, as you start to move down the scale to mid-level market and sacrifice visual details to keep usable frame rates, PC gaming experience levels to console very quickly, and dips below. Is it more effort being made on console games development, better optimisation or something else, I don't know, but PC requires more hardware power than console to give same level of details. Just look at the game like God of War or Gran Turismo 4 on old PS2 - what games could run on PC with 28MB of RAM and 4MB of video RAM..?

RE: Anyone but Gearbox!!!
By Alexstarfire on 9/5/2010 8:20:22 PM , Rating: 1
Congrats on knowing that coding for everything means it'll be less efficient than coding for one set of hardware.

I'm not going to try to argue about whole markets. I don't have the kind of information to make accurate statements. I doubt anyone does. If even a quarter, which is probably a gross underestimate, of those PCs were being used to play games that's still about as much as all the consoles combined. You have to remember that it's not just modern big name games, which is actually probably a rather small portion of the whole market, but also the likes of Farmville. People play Farmville on their phones now-a-days and tons of games like that. Plenty of good flash games that cost money. Well over half of computers out there can run flash games.

RE: Anyone but Gearbox!!!

What you say only holds true if you pit a brand new console vs a brand new PC. Not more than 18 months old. By the time a console releases its hardware is alreay 1 year behind PCs. At 2 years mid range PCs are better and 3 years low end PCs are probably better.

If you added the price of your brand new console and PC together you would have been able to just buy a better PC.

Also you are comparing apples to oranges. Acceptable frame rates on a console is 30 fps where as it is 60 on a PC to most people Heck most console noobs don't even have a clue what fps are. Even if they do their garbage controllers do not allow them to move fast enough to play fast games anyway.

Now I am a console fanboy? LOL , I have had a PS3 all of 6 months. My last console prior to that was the original Nintendo I bought back in 1989.

As usual, you pick particular sentences, ignoring the whole overall point, then create sides in your mind and label the other side. Its not all good and evil. There is no "pc vs console" war here, and I am no "console biased fanboy" you heaping idiot.

I am simply saying that the vast majority of gamers, games, game developers and money is going to consoles. If that offends you, then you have issues. If that makes me a fanboy in your small "us vs them" mind, then fine. I am a fanboy. Whatever, you need to grow up.

The truth is, I really wish PC would have been the victor. Better control, flexibility, mods, customizations etc etc. All I was saying is the facts... The facts are consoles are where gaming is at now. There is nothing you or I can say or do to make that untrue.

"Kinect for Xbox and Natal for PS3 will be sealing the nails in the coffin of PC gaming even more"

You are so aggro on every issue, i dont get that. Most people dont think like you. I fail to see how making a simple statement gives me an "anti-pc bias". Again, you are creating arguments and aggression where none exists. I am the furthest thing in the world from an anti PC fanboy. I love PC. I love what it has done for the world, and I love what it has done for my career, as well as my spare time. I absolutely love them, and am grateful that I can make a living playing with PC's and helping others on them all day long. I dont get why me saying that most game developers, and most gamers are on consoles makes you angry. What difference does it make to you anyhow? What of anything I said turns you to the dark side? We are talking about games, which from what I can tell, we both like. It not something to be all angry about.

The only animosity at all here is the animosity in your head. You have issues my friend, I hope that in real life you are less of a nutjob than you come off online. If the fact that console games are far bigger than PC games really angers you that much, I suggest you seek professional help.

He's kind of right. The "nail in the coffin" comment has no basis in fact. As such it is a very strong opinion against PC gaming. Even if that's not what you intended, that's how it looks to us.

Yes, it's obvious that most developers are moving to consoles. It's not that hard to see why. They say it's because of piracy, but that's bullshit. Of course, anyone who knows about the whole piracy issue knows that. It's about money, it always is. They have seen how much MMOs make and want to set up a similar type of system on the console. A subscription type service won't really work for non-MMO games. Instead of a subscription service they sell you all the add-ons: weapons, mods, maps, outfits, etc.

Console gaming isn't and can't be bigger than PC gaming. A few hundred million consoles vs over a billion PCs. Yes, not all are used to play games and yes not all of them will run the latest and greatest games, but those aren't the only games made and/or played.

RE: Anyone but Gearbox!!!

The devil is always in the details.

When these numbers come out that show PC gaming in massive decline they use words like "retail sales". That means a colorful box with a disk in it sold by Best Buy or Gamestop. I haven't bought one of those for a while. See, PCs have this thing called Steam, and some estimates show that half of all PC game title sales go through it. Steam is conveniently not part of the Retail Sales channel.

Also, there are all kinds of games. Subscription MMOs are typically not counted (or at most they count it as one sale - one sale that ends up making the developer hundreds of dollars each). Casual games are never counted, and the analysis of time-played on casual PC games dwarfs all other games combined due to the fact that there really are a billion or two boxes capable of playing them.

Obviously, PCs are not in the drivers seat for game development (except a few key types like MMOs and RPGs). I really think that Microsoft might be realizing that hurting PCs to advance the Xbox platform could potentially hurt Windows. If I wasn't playing games on my PCs I really don't see much need to have Windows on it.

It's about money

You realize they are one in the same right? More piracy = less money.

I don't think developers have ever tried to say otherwise. They say its about piracy. Which can be read as "we make less money". Less money typically means less, worse, or no games.

By Alexstarfire on 9/6/2010 4:55:36 PM , Rating: 1

That's because the MW2 version on PC is total shit. You lose a lot of sales when you tell your customers to f*ck off with a lack of features that have existed in every PC game since quake. Of all the people smart enough to realize how a PC is a superior gaming experience, you just lost about 75%.

No dedicated servers, because IW knows better than us. No lean because consoles can't do that, so why not limit PC players too. Unlockable gametypes, because everyone loves playing for hours before even being able to play the game they want. No way to pick the map you want to play, because it's impossible for someone to like a single map above others. Costly DLC packages that historically came free in patches for other games.. To name a few.

I for one will not pay $60 ($10 price hike over every other PC title) and $15 for a map pack of 5 maps for a game that doesn't even let me choose what game I want to play in.

3. Only to a fanboy would this be insulting. In a non literal sense, it will be nailing the coffin. not that PC game sales will be dead, but the vast disparity in game sales and developers focus will grow even more when Kinect and Natal are out.

When Natal and Kinect come out, + add a year or two for the bulk of the talented game developers out there to release a 2nd gen of games designed for it, its going to rock.

Imagine playing a boxing game where to throw and uppercut, you literally have to throw and uppercut and dodging means really dodging. Light saber battles with a handheld wand of sorts that matches your every move, etc etc. You could even potentially have a 3 stooges game where you get poked in the eyes, and the 2nd poke deflect it by placing your flat hand on the bridge of your nose perpendicular to your face to block the 2 finger eye poke. OK, that sounds rediculous, but you get my point, there is no limit to gaming with controllers like that.

There'll probably be a few games with maybe 1-2 that have any type of splash in the market. We all know that if it doesn't come standard it's going to be a very niche product.

I am not talking at release date, I am talking a few years down the road when the potential is reached and developers are making really great games with it. It will change the face of gaming forever. Maybe not the first release, but a future improved and cheaper version... Maybe even next gen consoles. Have you seen what it can do?

Try not to think of the cheesy games it will be released with, but years down the road. There are literally no limits to the games that can be made from it.

Niche market? Years from now we will be talking about how it changed gaming forever.

HAHAHAHAHA.... my daily laugh has been filled again.

I was talking about it's whole lifetime, not at release. Name one addon EVER that wasn't a niche product? Closest thing I can think of is Sega CD.... and you see how well that worked.

Kinect could be the addon that breaks the mold, but I think you're diluting yourself if that's something you are expecting. Move is too similar to the WiiMote to have any type of impact. If they use Kinect as a primary type controller for the next xBox..... THEN it could end up being game changing. The way it is now.... highly highly highly highly unlikely.

Glad I could help brighten your day LOL ;) ...

I am not talking about it as an add on, I am talking about the tech. Full motion sensors are going to change gaming. And yes, you can gaurantee the next Xbox and Playstation will both have it. Its going to be huge.

I got a chance to see it working in person at the Microsoft store here in Scottsdale AZ. The lines of absolutely awe struck people waiting to get a turn tell all. Believe me, its going to be big and will change gaming.

Just sitting here eating popcorn and drinking a Coke watching all the butt hurt people fight over consoles and PCs.

Fact: Console gaming is bigger than PC gaming now.
Fact: This isn't changing anytime soon.
Fact: PCs are more powerful and offer a better graphical and control experience for certain games.
Fact: Consoles have risen to the top because developers don't have to worry about piracy as much and because they don't have to design their game around every changing, and endless system configurations. This means cheaper development and more profit.

I love PCs for some games and consoles for some games. RPGs are more fun on consoles. PCs have better control on FPSs and RTSs. However consoles can have good controls for an FPS when they're done right. RTSs will never really be suited for consoles since the level of quick, accurate control for selection of units isn't there.

But more as of late, I like being able to sit on the couch instead of at my desk. This generally lends itself to consoles. I am getting FFXIV when it comes out on PC at the end of the month. However once the PS3 version becomes available, I am going to do the majority of my playing on it. Why? Because its more relaxing. Now if I want to watch something on TV while playing, I can just fire up the PC since I have it set up on a coffee table next to the couch. Graphics really aren't a big deal either way. Awesome graphics don't make a bad game good.

Get over the hate. Play on what you want. It's your money and your time. And pay for your games. Otherwise they won't make any more and the ones they do make suck more.

YAWN! "PC gaming is dead...."...YAWN!

That line was stated many times over several years...hell I remember people saying that around the time the original Xbox was brand new.

The fact is I do think ONE day MAYBE that line may come true -- but for now and the forseeable future if for no other reasons than MMO's and strategy games PC's will have a life beat and a strong one at that.

I don't care what ANY console fanatic says MMO's just aren't the same on a console....and when millions upon millions play a SINGLE MMO that ranks in just over a BILLION dollars gross per year...and remember that's just from ONE MMO franchise (WoW btw is what I'm referring to)...I have to think if you added up the gross take from all the major MMO's --- Aion, EQ, Warhammer, EVE, etc. we have be a couple billion annually if WoW can do a billion by itself.

With billions flowing around trust me...PC gaming will be fine...

As long as the MMO market holds strong interest (and the dollars and subscriber stats say it is) PC gaming will have a place.

...the funny thing is Xbox 360 could easily do an MMO like WoW and be successful I think....but Blizzard refuses to port it to console....just throw it over to Xbox 360 and make a mouse and keyboard ...bam now you just tapped into millions of more potential subscribers who are just console gamers...

I guess Blizz just thinks it would be too much work and then they'd have to support both a PC and a Console platform too...

Yes, Blizzard of all companies thinks it would be too much work. Because that statement makes any sense what-so-ever.

Don't know why they decided not to do it. Likely it's because they think they won't get a lot of sales. Runs on most computers and they practically give away the game for free since you have to pay for monthly subscriptions. What would be the point in spending a lot of time and effort for practically no sales?

I honestly don't know to agree with you or if that was a very poor attempt at flaming me.....if it was a flame that was horrid as I can't be offended if I have no idea WTF you are trying to say....

And btw I didn't mean to suggest it would be "free to play" in a console's my point...if it went to console MORE people paying for it each month....

You fail at reading comprehension I guess. The first part of my post was sarcasm. I'll use sarcasm tags for you next time.

I don't know where you got this "free to play" thing from either. I never said that. I also said that since pretty much everyone can play it on their computer and that it's basically free for them to get the program that almost no one would buy a console version. Why would they? At best it'd be equal to the PC version, though that's not likely, and they'd probably already have it. It'd be a lot of effort for very little return.
