North Korea is apparently a "male" interested in men.  (Source: Facebook)

The nation's Twitter feed says that the country's leader Kim Jong Il is a fashion icon who's earned praise from French designers.
Twitter post proclaims that Kim Jong Il is fashion expert

Self-proclaimed "internet expert" and "Dear Leader" of North Korea, Kim Jong Il, must get bored pretty frequently.  After all, North Korean media proclaims there's not much the beloved dictator hasn't done; they claim he's done everything from compose six operas to regularly scoring three to four holes-in-ones per round of golf.

But the North Korean leader is reportedly setting his eyes on a new challenge -- befriending the world on Facebook.  Mr. Jong Il's government has opened a Facebook account as part of its social media propaganda blitz.

The effort began with the launch of a website,, earlier this year.  The word "uriminzokkiri" roughly translates in english to "one nation/people".  In July a YouTube channel of the same name launched (it currently has 1621 subscribers and 269,246 upload views), and in August a similarly-named Twitter account, @uriminzok, was launched.

The page and channel were mostly in Korean and look primarily to spread propaganda attacking the U.S./South Korea, while glorifying North Korea and its government.

The latest effort appears to be a Facebook account that also bears the "uriminizokkiri" moniker.  And the page had a bit of a surprise for the world.  Apparently North Korea initially described itself as a "man" who is "Interested In: Men".  The entry has since been removed, but not before it spread around the internet.

Some internet writers have voiced support of North Korea's shortlived apparent proclamation of newfound sexuality.  MediaITE's Steven Jessop quips, "North Korea: he’s here, he’s queer, get used to it… or else."

Perhaps should have suspected North Korea's interests, given that an earlier post on North Korea's homepage which praised Kim Jong Il's fashion sense, commenting, "The august image of the Great General, who is always wearing the modest suit while working, leaves a deep impression on people's minds in the world. That is because his image as a great man is so outstanding."

That post even went on cite a French designer as praising the leader's fashion sense, commenting, "Kim Jong Il mode, which is spreading expeditiously worldwide, is unprecedented in history."

Unfortunately North Korea's Facebook page has received slightly less supportive comments.  One follower, David Travis writes:
Kim Jong Il is totally awesome!

by far the cutest woman leader, EVER!
An apparently fake account posing as Hugo Chavez has also left a number of posts on North Korea's wall.  The page has been liked by 2,625 as of press time.

South Korea though, is unlikely to be "liking" North Korea's page anytime soon.  They already blocked the nation's Twitter feed for containing "illegal" content.  South Korean Commission official Han Myung-ho, states, "We are aware of the Facebook account and the police and the National Intelligence Service are currently investigating the site to verify whether it is indeed run by the North Korean government.  If we find that this Facebook account also carries content violating the National Security Law, we will do our duty of shutting it down as well."

It looks like if there's one thing Kim Jong Il can't do, it's convincing his Southern neighbors to answer his friend requests.  Perhaps those internet skills are slipping.

Of course, this interesting Facebook account, like virtually any user generated content on the internet, may not be from an authentic source.  It does seem possible that it's official, though, given the official Twitter and YouTube Channels, and the fact that the Facebook links to the nation's homepage.
