Four-foot AI programmed to mimic human characteristics; can snore, tell jokes, laugh.
It's
called "Aimec", short for Artificially Intelligent
Mechanical Electronic Companion 3, and it is the invention of Tony
and Judie Ellis. According to the Daily
Mail,
the couple from South-East England run a toy development and
invention company out of their home called
"Conceptioneering". Before creating
Aimec, they earned their fortune developing the game "Cube
World". "Cube World made me," said former electrician
and electronic engineer Tony Ellis. "I could retire on the
royalties now. But it has freed me up to concentrate on my real
hobby, which is robots."
Aimec is a one-eyed, four-foot,
plastic robot that utilizes voice
recognition and moves around on wheels. To maneuver
through the house, Aimec follows someone or accesses an internal map
of the home.
Aimec has been programmed to snore while
sleeping, and stretch when it awakes. It impersonates the voice
of C-3PO from Star Wars, connects
to household appliances to help out with housework, laughs,
jokes, and even surfs the internet.
Ellis, who
built a career working on car alarms, airplane technology, and early
GPS systems believes that in 10 years, every home will have a robot
to help mow the lawn, cook, and clean house.
"The amazing
thing is that most of the technology is already here," adds
Ellis.
Ellis states that the processing power for his Aimec
invention can all be found within the average laptop.
"One
thing is for sure - robots will be huge. We are at the same
stage as computers in the 1980s, when everyone was saying they would
never take off. We are just on the cusp. I can see it as clear as
day."
After more tinkering, the couple plans to market
Aimec as the first commercially available home robot.
They expect that it could sell for about $300 dollars.
According
to their Conceptioneering website,
the couple also specializes in creating game concepts for companies
like Wesco, Radica and Mattel. They utilize microcontrollers,
sound controllers, and VR controllers for products like TalkPro,
SkipMates, Bin Buddies and Chalkie Talkie.
