Motorola Droid X

Updates, updates, updates, and never at the same time

Earlier this week, analysts announced that Android OS is now the smartphone market leader, despite critics charges that the ubiquitous operating system is too fragmented for consumers to stick with it. This fragmentation is evident in today's Android news.

First, the Moto Droid X, Verizon's 4.3" answer to Sprint's HTC EVO 4G, is slated to receive Android 2.2 "Froyo" in September, according to a rep on a Motorola support forum:

Some Droid X users are experiencing an issue using Exchange 2003 email. Though the email is arriving on the Droid X, no notifications are appearing. A fix for this will be included in the upgrade to Android 2.2 scheduled for deployment by early September.

The X had previously received a minor upgrade fixing some early bugs shortly after it launched last month, at the same time that the Froyo timeline for the HTC Incredible was announced. As of press time, 2.2 for the Incredible is only available as a leak, available here, with an official OTA update rumored to be coming very soon.

And while we're on the topic of leaked ROMs, the EVO 4G has had its share before it received the official OTA update earlier this week. Engadget reported that early adopters who updated to the first Froyo build (.3) discovered on HTC's servers had installed a non-final build. But a user on XDA Developers has posted the updated .6 RUU, which should solve any problems. Please note, however, that this update will wipe all user data from your phone – so if you want a non-destructive update, you may want to wait for HTC's official fix.

Finally, it is reported that AT&T will be launching the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 sometime between now and the middle of September. While this handset was worth drooling over when it was announced last year, the Android landscape has evolved so much so that there is little on this device that demands attention -- especially when you consider that it will most likely launch with Android 1.6.

Why we got so few android devices in Canada is beyond me. Best we have so far is the HTC Legend. Telus is coming with a "brand new phone" this fall: the HTC Desire, I think it's a 9 month old phone! Laughable. Where are the droid X, the incredible? The galaxy s? Bring us something worth having!!!

We really should have sided with the americans during the american revolution....

The Canucks had a second chance in 1812 and blew it.

/would welcome a merger with Canada, especially if that means your health program would come to the States.

The average waiting period to see a specialist in Canada is 16 weeks. So getting everyone else to pay for something might look at first good but single payer worldwide has shown it stifles quality and innovation in an industry the United States has LED for decades. And yes the United States has led the world in many areas.

But for many people its not about that. They are only happy if everyone shares misery equally.

This is why Canadians suck. They're just like commies. Everyone must be equally poor.
WTH? Canadians are awesome!

@ Pirks
I am always being told by my media how EVERYone loves us. You are obviously not a real person. If you are, you have to love us, my media said so.

@ chaser
That bit about sharing misery equally is so true. Except Cdns disquise their hate and prejudice behind social justice and moral superiority.

I apologize for how heavey I am about to come across, but sometimes it just has to be said: Are you exceptionally stupid or just a complete dumbf**k.

What is termed universal healthcare and Canada's system is considered to be ABSOLUTE bottom of the barrel when it comes to universal healthcare.

You want healthcare like: Sweden Finland or Norway. Like Italy Germany Switzerland. Like Portugal Spain France. Like Holland Belgium Denmark. England Ireland Iceland. Austria Greece South Africa. New Zealand Australia Japan. South Korea Singapore Hong Kong
YOU DO NOT WANT CANADIAN HEALTHCARE. Cdn media would never dare compare to any other country than yours.

I have family in Michigan so I have been aware of our (Canada's) propoganda since a wee lad. It is propoganda. Our Health care system blows dogg dykk.

Health care was what gave Canada its moral superiority over America. Now that America has universal healthcare I wonder what my country is gonna use to justify their smug biggotry. Hockey??!?!

Because I tell the truth about my countries healthcare I am branded a bad Canadian, if I don't like it I should get out of the country. All because I expect better from my country.

Canada, the country that would have nothing if it wasn't for our rich Uncle Sam letting us ride his coattails.

@ all Americans
The problems in the world are not all because of you. But blaming you makes it easier to cover the smell of our own $hytte. Please refer to the Iraqi food for oil scandal, The lead company in that scandal is SNC Lavalin, proudly Canadian, proudly responsible for millions of deaths every year. (They also make bullets for the NATO war machine)

That smell?? Must be coming from that American guy over there.

HTC Legend the best? The Milestone and Nexus One are both still better even if the Legend is newer. Rogers has the X10. The Galaxy S is comming this week (both Bell and Rogers). Telus will have the Desire but I hoped that it would be before fall.
Still, the fact that we always get android devices (and updates) late explain why there are so many iPhones in Canada.

I have a desire and my friend has a galaxy s.

Trust me, my phone looks and functions better than his galaxy s.

The screen may be bigger, but the resolution isn't. The desire fits in a top pocket of a shirt, the galaxy s is just that wee bit too big.

The case of the galaxy s leaves a LOT to be desired (no pun intended). It is remarkably plasticy, and feels cheap and nasty.

The HTC sense UI easily surpasses the stock android and the galaxy s. I also notice that the screen on the galaxy is not as responsive as the desire.

This is from first hand experience, not something I have read on the Internet. And it is purely my own (and his) opinion.

"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance." -- Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer
