HTC EVO 4G owners rejoice: Froyo will soon be here!

When it comes to Android-based smartphones, the HTC EVO 4G has pretty much been the cream of the crop (that is until the Motorola Droid X came on the scene to share the spotlight). The phone features a fast 1GHz processor, large 4.3” display, front- and rear-facing cameras, and of course 4G access courtesy of Sprint's WiMAX network.

Tomorrow, however, the EVO 4G is set to get even better thanks to an Android 2.2 update according to Engadget. The update will be available tomorrow to customers that initiate the update via the phone's software update feature. The update will be pushed automatically to other EVO 4G customers starting the week of August 1.

In addition to the updates provided with Android 2.2 (Froyo), HTC also has included some new goodies of its own like the ability to use the LED flash as a flashlight and improved 720p video recording

You can read more about the Android 2.2 update for the HTC EVO 4G here.

Updated 8/2/2010 @ 8:30pm

The update is now available for download. Simply navigate to Settings > System Updates > HTC Software Update > Check Now to get in on the Froyo action.

Well it's up to the people at Motorola to push it for the Droid so that's their fault. For the Incredible... who knows.

Just let the Evo people test it for ya and work out the bugs.

Sound plan. Regardless, just seems odd being that the Incredible has been out longer. But then again it wasnt really marketed like the EVO was, the Incredible was kind of a silent killer. Better than the EVO, IMO. EVO and Droid X are just too large.

Supposed fixes are:

fps cap fixed, camera/camcorder functionality improved, improved zoom in function in internet (rumor), and of course the known 2.2 fixes. Most of these are working in rooted devices but who knows if it was included in this update.

It builds you an island and then transforms into a jet to take you there.

I don't care.

I don't care.

Seriously ? Put them on top of other smart phones, its not that much bigger than other phones, they just utilizes the real estate better, and if you use them for media or gaming its awesome.......

Well Giz, Engadget, and CNET disagree with your assessment. Um IMO.

The Droid X? In some ways. But Verizon doesn't have 4G. And I realize that no one feels that faster connectivity is important (/sarcasm) but 4G is still a distinctive feature for the EVO that no other carrier or phone has. There is 4G service in Salt Lake city where I live and Jacksonville, Fl, where I am working at right now and more cities across the country.

or unless you are using T-mobile's HSPA+ network (over 20 mbps with an HSPA phone, not out yet) through any HSDPA phone at 7.2mbps cap) and getting speeds that whip 4G in daily average performance.

I'm pulling down 6.3 mpbs and 3.8 mbps upload with my Vibrant. Its the same as my cable internet, albeit with a higher ping. And they didnt need to call it 4G to feel special.

In other words, your 4G hype is not impressive. Full HSPA+ phones and VZ's LTE phones are going to be the leap people have been waiting for.

I disagree, I'm in Vegas and I pull around 6 - 8mbps consistently over Sprints 4g. Your forgetting the fact that hspa+ has limitations, both wimax and lte can theoretically be expanded to over 300mbps...

Right, but I'm saying that you can bet that within the next 2 years, (typical phone life/contract life) you will not see any carriers ready to provide you with that level of content and consistency that you would desire a better wireless standard.

This is a limbo phase . By the time all of the puzzle pieces line up to take advantage of speeds over 7 mpbs to a mobile device, it will be time for your next upgrade.

Its about bragging rights more than anything in the mean time.

Well by the time the my Captivate gets Froyo, Gingerbread would have come out. Personally I'm waiting for Red Velvet or Tiramisu.

Google must put insulin in their developer's coffee. All they can think of is sweets.

Uhhh why not, it's easily one of the best Android phones out there. On a 2nd note, I played around with froyo on my brother's incredible today (he installed the leaked rom) and it is AMAZING, basically everything is just super smooth and fast, I can't wait to get it on my EVO.
