Droid X may give Verizon the excuse it needs to follow AT&T into tiered data plans

Verizon recently launched its slick and large-screened Droid X smartphone. The device received rave reviews and has been one of the most popular smartphones that Verizon has ever offered. The Droid X is selling well for Verizon so far, but the popularity of the handset has a downside for the wireless provider.

According to
PocketNow, Verizon has stated that the users of the Droid X smartphone are consuming much more data than the users of other smartphones on the Verizon network. Specifically, Verizon claims that Droid X user's consumer about five times more data than the users of other smartphones on the network.

Many will not be surprised by the higher data usage by Droid X owners. When consumers have a device that works well for watching video, browsing the web and other tasks the users tend to actually use the features. AT&T found this out with the iPhone when users of the smartphone started to consume many times more data than users of other devices.

One thing that isn’t clear for the data offered by Verizon is if the increased data usage also includes those who tether the Droid X or if it only includes data consumed directly on the phone. AT&T used the massive consumption of data by iPhone users as a reason to end unlimited data plans and start putting caps on data usage for all smartphone users.

DailyTech reported yesterday that Verizon might announce new tiered data caps starting on July 29. Presumably if Verizon does introduce data caps, users who buy the unlimited data plan today will be grandfathered in just like iPhone users who were already with AT&T. Pricing for the Verizon tiered plans is expected to be the same that AT&T offers at $25 monthly for 2GB and $15 monthly for 200MB.

but if I had bought one I would feel kinda shafted since Verizon just announced 4G will roll out officially in a few monthls and my shiny new phone (which Id be locked into for 2 years) wont support it and now it seems impending for Verizon to cap data plans so by the time 4G gets here it will be crippled by data caps anyways.

Well at least I dont need to worry about it on my EVO 4G unlimited. You can say WiMax sucks compared to LTE until your blue in the face but the reality is ANY 4G is better than no 4G. Any unlimited is better than a data cap any day.

The main reason LTE will be better than WiMax is for the same reason GSM was better than CDMA: number of carriers using the technology. Phone manufacturers tend to go after the larger audience first, and therefore carriers that have the widespread tech get better phones. Also, with more carriers using the tech, you'll be more likely to have the ability to roam, and more likely to be able to use your phone internationally. The actual abilities of the hardware, even with 3G, tend to be lost on the consumer.

Hmmm, not sure I agree. Sprint's 4G coverage hasn't reached us in central NJ and may not before VZN rolls out LTE. So that's not an issue in many places.

Also, I always get a 1 year contract. It costs just $30 more through most corporate purchasing plans, and the actual upgrade date is just 10 months after signing. Better yet, VZN will change the date if requested. This means I've been able to upgrade every 8 months, which allows me to sell a relatively new phone on eBay for close to what I paid for it, and still have the newest toy to play with.

I understand not everyone has access to a corporate discount, but even at $70 more, it may still be worth it to them to have the 1 year option.

4G will be limited at roll out, and there will be plenty of new devices on the market next year running better dual core processors, Android 3 (Gingerbread), etc. But who cares? The age old question is when is the best time to buy a computer? Answer is tomorrow. Meaning that anytime you buy something, there will be a better product coming along. You know this, but just wanted to stir the pot.

Your EVO will be yesterdays news very soon, just like my Droid X. Oh yeah, I did 1 year contract, and with the early upgrade option, I'll be eligable for an upgrade as eary as Mar of next year. So while you're stuck with your EVO and WiMax, I'll be on one of the newest devices and getting data a 4X the rate.

Well at least I dont need to worry about it on my EVO 4G unlimited.

You do if Sprint doesn't turn a profit and goes away. Then what'ca gonna do?

Any unlimited is better than a data cap any day.

All unofficial, so keep the speculating for another day.

I'm happy that you like your phone and carrier, but don't dare think for one second I view you as looking down on me for a bad choice. At least I can make calls from my house, something that sprint isn't able to do in my area (and yes, I'm in 4G coverage area).

I doubt that the data caps will be retroactive. They weren't on AT&T, only for new contracts.

I'm not sorry at all. I live in a small town, Sprint has no towers here, their users roam off of Verizon. TMobile has no towers, their users roam off of ATT. ATT has no 3G coverage and Verizon does. Doesn't seem like such a tough choice now does it?

But wait there's more! 4G won't hit this market until 2012 at the earliest. Hmmm, I bought my DX in 2010. I'll be eligible for my New Every Two discount just in time to get the shiniest new LTE phone out there.

I've only had my phone for 7 days, so I'm still in the "new gadget/very heavy use" phase. I still routinely get 14 ~ 16 hours of battery life out of my DX. How fast does that Evo download when it's battery is dead?

Can you hear me now?

Exactly. That's why I will be jumping in with a Verizon 3G Android Smartphone. I would rather have limited speeds than have a cap.

My only problem is hardware...

Droid Incredible? Droid X? Fascinate? All great hardware, but which should I chose? I'm leaning towards the Droid X since it comes with a free 16GB µSD card and was rooted this morning. The Fascinate looks nice, but Samsung has a horrid support record and it might not be released by the time the 4G data caps are in place.

Get a Droid X... I just had my hands on one yesterday. There are "complaints" of the size by some people, but I don't understand this if you want a smart phone. The screen size, and build of this phone is great! It felt great in my hands, and I'm not a large guy (5' 10" - 150 pounds). The keyboard on it (touch screen only) I've heard is very easy to use (best so far), but I can't personally verify that yet.

It's still a light phone, and comfortable to talk on. Besides, it has a metal body. The Incredible, for example, has a plastic/composite one. I could go on, but the X really is the best Droid right now IMO. If you're a data user, trust me, you will really enjoy the larger screen size. :-) If you're more of a phone user, or have smaller hands than average, then I'd probably get the Incredible.

Oh... You're Spartacus... Get the X... Smaller hands isn't a problem of yours. :-)

Wow. What does it matter to you? Take a breathe, put the keyboard down, and step outside for a moment. These are different phones, different people, and different companies. Why this is worthy of defaming people I will never know. Relax, it's NO BIG DEAL.

BTW I'm a lowly Droid Eris user. :p
