Motorola Droid X  (Source: Motorola)
The Droid X may be hard to find in some areas

The smartphone wars are hot right now with Android devices starting to take over the market and the Apple iPhone continuing to burn up the sales charts. While the iPhone remains shackled to AT&T for now, Android devices are available on all major carriers and many of the smaller regional carriers as well.

One of the latest Android devices to land on the market is the Motorola Droid X that launched officially today. The Droid X has been previewed and had its share of hands on treatments already so most buyers know exactly what the phone can do.

The Droid X is selling for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year customer agreement. The Android device operates on the 3G network Verizon owns and has a gigantic screen that will make some iPhone users jealous. The big display measures a generous 4.3-inches. Other features of the handset include an 8-megapixel camera and the ability to record HD video.

On-board memory for the Droid X is 8GB with a 16GB microSDHC card shipping with the handset. Along with the launch of the Droid X is a new 32GB microSDHC card that is a Verizon Wireless exclusive from SanDisk. Buyers of the Droid X who also get the 32GB microSDHC card at the same time will get $50 off the price of the memory card and bring the total storage capacity of the Droid X to 40GB. With the discount, the 32GB memory card will cost $99.

Verizon is also allowing all current customers who have contracts ending by December 31, 2010 to upgrade to the Droid X with no penalties.

Well, some of us don't live in our Mom's basement at the age of 30 with 6 cats and spend our days dismantling hardware, so I really could care less if you can "mod" a Droid X or not. If it has the features I want out of the box, I'll consider it. If not, I won't. Very simple.

The bigger issue is the growing trend of people who are tired of 2 year contracts and paying close to $100 a month in data and other charges just to use a cell phone. For as little as $15-$20 a month I can get a prepaid phone that connects to a cell tower just as easily as any contract phone. No, I won't have little apps to play with all day, but I'll be putting $70 a month in my savings account!

If you think that way, than why are you even on dailytechs website? This site catered towards people that care about all the little details of new tech gadgets. People who love and crave technology, not people who are still troubled with text messaging on their pre-paid cell phones.

And the people that live in their mom's basement are WOW addicts, the people that are dismantling and hacking the hardware are usually intelligent enough to sustain a job that pays very well, and do their hacking on the side for hobby.

And yes, it does matter when you cannot do as you please with your own personal property, especially when it runs on an open source OS!

Oh really? Is that why we have oil updates? Political updates? even a mention of wackadoo environmentalists wanting to build a floating city out of garbage? That's real technology is it?

Uhh, youre on the wrong site if you care about " little details of new tech gadgets". If you want that I recommend This site is just a general heads up of whats happening, and with a huge bias at that.

Right, because unless you live in Mom's basement you can't have hobbies.

I'm by no means an electronics guy so I wouldn't do something like that. Instead I spend my days dismantling cars, basically the same thing in your "argument". Some of us don't mind spending money to have an interest/hobby where we try different things and learn different things simply for our own curiosity and interests.

It's OK though Greg, even shallow people can have hobbies. Have you thought about buying a Prius and hyper-miling so you can troll forums about your awesome mileage? It's a first step.

Maybe Greg would be ok with a car that bricked its ECU when he uses fluids in his car that are not from the manufacturer of the vehicle.

I do electronics and I have a hobby in cars. If cars where built like that Motorola phone, theres no way we could piggy back to the ECU, chip them, or even use an aftermarket stand alone ECU, which pretty much means no tuning of any kind on your new parts you just installed. Greg's ok with that, but not me!

I spend $70 at lunch on a Tuesday. Get your ass off of the daily tech commenting page and go build your resume.

I agree here. If I had my choice I would like to get a phone that had no camera even. Many of the places I go will not let you in the front door if you have a camera, any camera, so the phone stays in the car.

While I would like to get this phone, the contract and the monthly charges suck. I haven't checked, but is there any carrier out there that will let you buy the phone without charging a minimum $40+ monthly data fee, even if you don't use it?
