A PDF accidentally showed up on Seagate's website earlier today with the latest details on perpendicular desktop hard drives

Seagate insiders contacted us early this morning with a few snippets of information (PDF) concerning the upcoming Barracuda 7200.10 series hard drives.  Like other Barracuda drives, the 7200.10 series are based on 7,200RPM spindles. 

Two 750GB models have already shown up on the Seagate website.  The Barracuda 7200.10 ST3750640A (PATA) and the ST3750640SA (SATA) will be two new models we can look forward to seeing this year.  The Seagate webpage reveals dozens of other NCQ-ready 7200.10 based products ranging from 200GB on up.  Cache information was not available via the website yet, but the official Seagate PDF claims the Barracuda 7200.10 series will come with 16MB and 8MB buffers.  Considering these two drives will be the best of breed for Seagate, it is fairly safe to assume these drives will have 16MB caches.

Seagate representatives have told us that the information posted was "very premature" and was not be posted on the website for several weeks.  Seek time information has not been released yet, which has traditionally been considered the problem area for perpendicular recording devices.  However, the 7200.10 datasheet claims all drives in the series will have a 4.16ms average latency time.

Several days ago Seagate announced its Cheetah 15K.5 series drives based on 15,000RPM platters. The Cheetah 15K.5 series also uses perpendicular recording to increase densities, but is solely limited to SCSI right now.  Pricing is not available yet on either the 15K.5 or 7200.10 series.  All Seagate hard drives come with 5-year warranties.

Strangly enough it's hard to find a local shop here that sells seagate drives nowadays, it's all maxtor (ewww) and WD (fine products).
Of course there's always mailorder but the mail is quite rough with packages and a HD via the mail is a bit hazardous in my opinion.
There's a definate advantage for a company to get a good distributor chain going and an active marketing effort, yet so many don't seem to try very hard.

Seagate purchased Maxtor awhile ago. I have no problem finding Seagate, and I live in Hawaii. I would not ever use a Maxtor (Pre-Seagate) or WD; their drives are just not up to the level of Seagate. Seagate drives are standard fare in CompUSA, Circuit Ciyt, Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, Frys, etc...If you can't find Seagate you either need glasses or are not looking very hard.

In my experience, WD drives are as good as Seagate.

But I agree, I would never buy a Maxtor.

In my personal experience, I've had more Seagate drives die on me than WD's, but regardless seagateswarranty service is top notch, and I had a replacement at my door shortly. WD's service is also just as good though too.

Maxtor pfft. Who?

If you call paying $24.99 to get a replacement sent to you, or having to wait over a week and pay your own shipping, top notch I want to work for you. Luckily if they send you a defective replacement, then they will do the advanced exchange for free, only taking 4 days to arrive.

I find it ironic all the hate you guys are showing for Maxtor and the love for WD... In over a decade of building PC's (mostly for myself - but a few for other people) I've had about 4 separate WD drives fail on me or arrive DoA. All bought at separate places mind you, and at separate times. Mean while, I only had one problematic Maxtor drive - the rest have been golden.

I no longer use WD..in my mind they are the trashy HDD, not Maxtor. WD is popular because they are "trendy". They have the most famous brand name recognition (kind of like McDonald's or Nike). Their quality is suspect to me though.

As for Seagate..only used about 5 of those my whole life..but not a single problem with any of those...I'm looking to Seagate for my next gaming PC project.

I have to agree. I've purchased 5 WDs over the years because of the good reviews and price/performance numbers. Unfortunately, every one has died on me (they've only lasted 6 months to 3 years). Whereas I have only seen one Seagate fail, and have never had a problem with Maxtor. That's finally enough that I will never trust WD again.

I was under the impression that HDDs could take a large amount of shock when not operating. Plus, if a substantial amount of them actually got damaged in shipping, then it wouldn't be profitable for the shipper, and I'm guessing you wouldn't see them shipping anymore. I think you are overly paranoid about it.

according to the specs they can take 300G.. Considering that their is little chance that normal package delivery would possible damage these. A plasma screen tv certainly will not, nor many other things mailed every day.

Not to be mean, but how do you think the drives get to the stores?? Any kind of transport, to the stores or to the home, can be rough...

Nevertheless there may be additional shipping and individual package handling (instead of cases) that can subject the drives to great # of shock events or greater shock. The issue is not just "shipping it" but the exact details of what may happen while shipping.

If the drives are at the local store then they got shipped at some point to get there. Unless your local store drives directly to the Seagate factory, picks up the drives and carries them back to the store in a baby cradle.

At a access time of 4.16ms, these should be able to outperform the raptor. Really fast access time, allow for application to load fast. What you guys thinlk. And oh yes. how many platters will the 200gig be and the 750gig be.

Why does Perpendicular recording mean lower access times for you? For me it means higher data density and thus higher transfer speed. Access times are influenced by other factors - afaik.

I don't know if you are using HDDs for video recording only, but for anyone who runs programs (starting with Windows) from a hard drive, access time is important, as well as sustained transfer speed.

I think the extra space comes from the fact that they are using perpendicular recording, which saves space on the existing platters. I'm glad it transitioned from the laptop drive market already

Just another thought. I wounder whether these higher density platters will lead to two platter 400GB drives. It's not just the cost that puts me off 400GB and 500GB models at the moment, it's the number of platters. I prefer drives with just two platters at most since they tend to run cooler and hopefully have lower noise levels.

Well considering that the 500GB model is using the most advanced of Platter technology, 200Gb platters. Though the 400GB model is using older technology with 3 platters, but hwat is nice though is that 320GB model now which is finally limited to 2 platters.

It would be interesting though since the limit of 3.5inch HD is 5 platters and Segate now does indeed have 200GB platter technology, they can create a 5 platter 1TB drive if they do so desire, but Segate typically doesn't like to use that many platters.. Hitachi does though.

I cna't wiat for these drives hopefully they will bring down the price of older models.

It now seems were maxing out at 188Gb per platter which is pretty impressive only a little bit further to get to 200gb per platter :P

Impressive or reckless, since having a greater margin between possible head discrimination and platter density should allow for fewer read problems/related failures. There are plenty of other potential failure areas though, but IMO, IF they're going to keep using mechanical drives, getting reliablity as high as possible should be at least as much (more, actually) of a priority than highest capacity. Truth is, the average user does not need 1TB HDDs. We that do are a small minority.

why hate on maxtor! had what 1-2 die on you, I have had hundreds of maxtors, in many systems never had a problem as a whole iv seen every type of hdd there is die eventually that includes the precious raptors.

Im using an raid 5 setup with maxtor diamond 10s right now works great.

Do a search of Seagate quality problmes and learn how to effectively use a search engine.

With that said, I've been many Maxtor drives (~20) and 5 of those have bit the dust due to heat issues.

Maxtor isn't bad, I've had several Maxtor HDD's, and have not had a failure. I have had one, and only ONE hard drive fail, and that was a Hitachi (Read: IBM). Thankfully, it was a timely failure, I hadn't had time to transfer much data to the drive, which was brand fire new, go figure.

Agreed, people get a mindset then can't be convinced otherwise. Oh well, OEMs use Maxtors and have about the only 3rd party perspective with enough of a sample size to really know this.

I've had many Maxtor drives and have not lost one yet. I've had many WD drives and have lost quite a few, but I'll still buy whatever is the best value at the time because I refuse to get hung up on brand names and quality.

Of course you are right. They delibrately put this stuff up without mentioning it because they know it will be found quite quickly and reported on numerous websites like these and generate free publicity for them.

This is so sweet to here, with Woodcrest coming out I planning on building an awesome machine.

I am curious with the cost of these guys.. It would likely be better to have 4 400G than 3 500G in Raid 5 array. I know I purchase a 400G IDE for $100 with rebates - Seagate .9 series I believe.

I guess it still would be better to have SAS 15000 Rpm drives on for OS.

Over all, I am very happy with this neews - it means more space and likely cheaper and faster.

I have loved Seagate since owning a 32 Mb 5 1/4" drive in the mid 80s. It did a little dance when accessed rapidly and could bounce an old IBM AT case right off the desk.

I have used Seagates exclusively for years, but once made the mistake of buying a Maxtor external backup (80 GB, 1394). The drive died, of course, and Maxtor tech support took hours to acknowledge that. I got a new one after pledging my first born and CC#, but never again.

Long live Seagate.
