The iPad has sold over 3 million units. If it can sustain this sales pace up until the back-to-school and holiday seasons, it could sell between 9 million and 11 million units this year.  (Source: Apple)
It's over 3 MILLION!!!

Love Apple or hate it, it's impossible to deny that Apple knows how to make a hit product.  The company currently has the largest market cap of any tech company in the world.  After returning from medical leave Apple CEO Steve Jobs returned swinging for the fences, announcing the iPad tablet computer in January.  The iPad launched in Wi-Fi form on April 3 (U.S.), in 3G form on April 30 (U.S.), and finally in nine more countries on May 28.

Apple quickly blazed through sales of 1 million and 2 million units, leading some analysts to predict it could sell as many as 8 million units this year.

It certainly looks like that's a strong possibility, considering that Apple just sold its 3 millionth iPad on Monday, only 80 days after the device's launch.  Steve Jobs cheered the news, stating, "People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives.  We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month."

With the iPad, the tablet has become a hot new field of computing, which many say could rival netbooks or even traditional PCs.  After Apple's success many companies have scrambled to release tablets, but none of them have made it to market in the U.S. yet.

What makes the sales of the iPad particularly impressive is that they were generated during the traditionally weak summer months.  Between back-to-school shopping and the holiday season, Apple can anticipate sales to possibly rise in the near term.

Given this, we would raise the previous analyst estimates and actually estimate that Apple will sell between 9 million and 11 million iPads this year.

I suppose that high sales = hit product. Though this is just another in the long line of iDrone purchases. Apple makes it and they buy it.

Enjoy Steve tracking your every move via your iPhone and iPad. Though I suppose that the tracking is a feature.

If it was easy, Apple's competitors would be just as successful.

Say what?

Apple is in 4th place in the PC market, and as a whole is still a very tiny percentage of the PC market.

In the Smart Phone market, Apple is ranked 3rd, impressive, but... They are loosing ground very quickly against Android and probably Windows Phone 7 in the future.

In the Tablet market (That's the iPad)... Well, can give them credit where credit is due, but there have already been Tablets on the market for over a decade, they are relying on there brand name recognition to sell.

Then in the MP3 player market, they are a monopoly, however this market is saturated.

Location tracking is extremely useful. In a few years, people will wonder how anyone could have been opposed to such a useful technology.

NO NO NO! It should be highly illegal to do that regardless of where you are, it is... INVASION OF PRIVACY!

Name me one good reason that having Apple track what you do is good for us? No, seriously, I'm interested, I would rather burn in hell before I give up my right for privacy and freedom. - Get your head checked.

Reader1 even you can not think this location tracking is a good thing. There is no point ot it all it serves is Apple & noone else. Do not let Apple fool you into thinking they did this for you because they did not. Ever heard of iADs or whatever Apple calls it. Think about it with location tracking on when you are traveling in a town or city & happen to go by a bestbuy or Subway fast food place & your phone starts vibing your pocket & you look at it & it is showing you a AD for bestbuy or whatever store you are by or just past. You tell me then how good this location tracking crap is.

If you still think it is a good thing then fella you got issues & so does anyone else that thinks so. I also seen that it will be on the APple desktops ummm WHY it is not like your MAC is going to be doing any traveling except maybe from one end of the room to the other. I would not have an issue with this if they actually made it something the customer could get something out of it. Maybe there will be good points to it but for the mostr part it is to serve APPLE no one else except those ompanies that pay APple for our information.

Here is an interesting statistic.

Larva Labs estimates that Android Market payouts to developers in total is only 2 percent of App Store’s $1B payout to developers.

I guess thats why there are so few apps for Android.

Developers will follow the money and currently the money trail leads straight to Apple and the App Store.

First off, it's an estimate. I don't know and don't really care how they came up with the estimate. To be fair, the Apple number is also an estimate. No actual numbers exist for the two marketplaces.

Secondly, unlike with Apple not everything has to come from the Android Marketplace. If it doesn't include apps that aren't on the marketplace then it's a useless number regardless of how accurate it may be.

The tracking sucks. It sucks bad. You can turn off the tracking though. It is also insanely ironic considering the 1984 commercial.

I'd also like to say that having used an iPad it is actually a slick product. This is from borrowing one to use. Now, don't get me wrong, it's still a glorified iPod Touch but it's actually not a bad web browser and casual gaming device. My 18 month old daughter loves my iPod and watching the virtual fishes in Koi Pond and is one of the things that will quiet her. I bet she'd love to play with those fishes in an iPad. The photo viewing app also works surprisingly well for showing off photos.

So the thing is, the iPad is a consumer device. It's not targeted at the tech crowd. The complaints by the tech crowd is falling on deaf ears. I'm a tech oriented person and the experience I had with it is largely positive, even if it is within a walled garden and that's why it's a hot seller. As much as the techie crowd may be annoyed by products like the iPad, computing is largely about the mass market now. The computers of old which were "geek" products are dead. Computers are commodities.

That said, I have no need/want for the first gen iPad. I'll see what is in store with a second gen iPad.

To get back to the tracking, it sucks. It is also insanely ironic considering the 1984 commercial.


iPhones are not losing ground to Android. I'd say it's a case of Android growing faster than the iPhone and that the iPhone is eating into RIM and Nokia's market share at a slower pace than Android. The smart phone market is growing and that means that for Apple to grow at its previous rate, it'd have to sell much more iPhones than it has. But by any metric, the iPhone is still doing very very well. If I was Apple I'd be more worried about the stagnant music/media player market, which basically means iPods.


Did you actually try an iPad out? It's a slick device as I said in the above portion of my post and I also said I have no interest in getting one. But speaking as someone who has tried it out, it's actually a slick device. I can see why general consumers would buy one. If you want to label someone as a sucker, go talk to the people who bought pet rocks.
