Apple released iOS 4 ahead of the iPhone 4 launch

IPhone OS 4 was released yesterday for the iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod touch (second generation and third generation). As previously reported, this update bring some enhancements to the platform including Apple's vision of multitasking on a smartphone, folders for better app organization, iAds for in-app advertisements, and a multitude of minor UI updates.

I've personally been using iOS4 on my own iPhone 3GS since the Gold Master was released a few weeks and generally like it. I still find the addition of folders a bit of an afterthought and the multitasking menu is "just enough" instead of having the typical attention to detail that Apple is known for – webOS' “cards” system is still the best implementation around.

It's also readily apparent -- to me at least -- that Apple has milked its UI design for the iPhone just about as much as it can and it's time to inject some new life into the mobile iteration of OS X. Perhaps Apple will reinvent the wheel for iOS 5?

In other iOS 4 news, the Dev-Team has announced that there is a beta version of redsn0w that that will jailbreak the newly-released operating system on the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G. The Dev-Team notes that "It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w."

You can download the beta of redsn0w here.

"We can't expect users to use common sense. That would eliminate the need for all sorts of legislation, committees, oversight and lawyers." -- Christopher Jennings
