AT&T set to expand its Android lineup

It looks as though AT&T is slowly starting to come around with Android-based smartphones. Earlier this week, we told you about the budget-friendly HTC Aria that is coming to AT&T with a price tag of $129 with a two-year contract.

Today, AT&T is announcing another smartphone based on Android 2.1: the Samsung Captivate. The Captivate features a generous 4" Super AMOLED WVGA touch screen, 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 16GB of internal memory, 5MP camera, 720p video capture, 802.11n, Bluetooth 3.0, and HSPA 7.2Mbps connectivity.

”Add up Captivate’s amazing screen, huge amounts of onboard storage, a super-fast processor, all fueled by the nation’s fastest 3G network and a nationwide  Wi-Fi network and you get a smartphone we know our customers will crave,” said Jeff Bradley, AT&T Mobility Senior VP of Devices.

“The Captivate represents a new breed of smartphone that will truly change and enrich the way consumers interact with their device on an everyday basis.”

AT&T won't give any firm availability or pricing information on the Captivate other than to say that it will be released within the "coming months at AT&T retail locations."

Uhm, you scare me. Why? Because it 'sounds', from what you have wrote, that you believe in and support monopolies. I'm specifically referring to, Apple. First off, there is only ONE iphone design. Err, three, but the later being the iphone 4. So what other options do you have? With DROID handsets, at least you have competition within the phone carriers and device makers (design & specs). This is what consumers want, OPTIONS! 1984 was supposed to be the beginning of something new for consumers, and to 'stick it to the man' (Microsoft). Well it is now reversed. Jobs and his company, Apple, are the man. In a scary way. If you and apple lovers would like to continue being space zombies following a brand that is just that, a brand, be my guest. I'd prefer to take the road of more options and choice with the type of handset I want, but with the same software. Oh, and by the way, I am currently an iphone owner and previous Apple fanatic. With Job's current tactics and blaming customers/consumers of whining about the cell signal in the new iphone 4, that is insane. It shows that the 'dear leader' is starting to lose control of his community. On July 18th, I will be liberated from the iphone and its genious marketing tactics. I will be reborn and set free...
