AT&T set to expand its Android lineup

It looks as though AT&T is slowly starting to come around with Android-based smartphones. Earlier this week, we told you about the budget-friendly HTC Aria that is coming to AT&T with a price tag of $129 with a two-year contract.

Today, AT&T is announcing another smartphone based on Android 2.1: the Samsung Captivate. The Captivate features a generous 4" Super AMOLED WVGA touch screen, 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 16GB of internal memory, 5MP camera, 720p video capture, 802.11n, Bluetooth 3.0, and HSPA 7.2Mbps connectivity.

”Add up Captivate’s amazing screen, huge amounts of onboard storage, a super-fast processor, all fueled by the nation’s fastest 3G network and a nationwide  Wi-Fi network and you get a smartphone we know our customers will crave,” said Jeff Bradley, AT&T Mobility Senior VP of Devices.

“The Captivate represents a new breed of smartphone that will truly change and enrich the way consumers interact with their device on an everyday basis.”

AT&T won't give any firm availability or pricing information on the Captivate other than to say that it will be released within the "coming months at AT&T retail locations."

Boy Genius Report states that the Captivate is coming to AT&T July 18 with a price tag of $199 for a two-year contract.

Meh who cares... as long as the hummingbird finds its way to other phones.. Very Very similar design to the A4, with far more GPU punch than the usual from qualcomm.. (i.e the GPU in the snapdragon is a piece of **** compared to the CPU its paired with)

Someone in my office has one of these as a test device and it has a beautiful screen and is very responsive. I only got to play around with it for a few mins but I am impressed the video recording looks great.

This phone may be screwed up but yet it's not necessarily AT&T's fault. It's a Samsung phone! And all Samsung cares about is releasing new phones after new phones. How many Android phones have they released in a mere 6 months? i5700, I5500, I5800, I6500, I899, I8520, I9000. They don't have the resources nor the mind about supporting their existing ones, ask anyone who owns their Galaxy (myself included) the amount of bugs we live with on a daily basis that have no forseeable fix.

Buy a phone with a Samsung screen, they're awesome. But not a Samsung build.

In many ways, Samsung and the US market are going backwards with this phone. They have released better phones in the past that were never carried by the US carriers. Instead of leading, they are following Apple who is holding progress back, like usual.

Example: i8910 - 8MP Camera, same resolution AMOLED touchscreen, 720p video capture, 16GB space, 600MHz processor, 1500mAH battery, Sybian S60 5th.

The Captivate is basically the same phone, with a cheaper camera, worse battery life and different OS. This push to faster processors, cheaper cameras and smaller batteries makes no sense. Cell phone cameras need as much help as they can in quality to stay practical and a phone without power is just an expensive brick.
